John Stammers LIVE: "Greetings from St Mary's where Southampton host West Brom this afternoon. At the start of the season plenty may have expected these two sides to be fighting off relegation at this stage, but that certainly isn't the case for eighth-placed Baggies and thanks to their impressive late surge Saints are also now pushing for a top-half finish. The rain is threatening to pour down, and we've already had a few short bursts, but hopefully that doesn't dampen the two sides and we can look forward to a good game of football."
West Brom's Youssuf Mulumbu is still suspended while Chris Brunt is out injured, so Graham Dorrans starts in central midfield alongside James Morrison and Claudio Yacob. Billy Jones is injured and Steven Reid returns to the starting line up at right back, while Goran Popov is also replaced by Liam Ridgewell at left-back. Shane Long returns to the starting XI in attack alongside Marc-Antoine Fortune and Romelu Lukaku.
Southampton are unchanged from last time out with Luke Shaw picking up a fresh injury after recovering from a virus. Morgan Schneiderlin recovers from a knock to start while Gaston Ramirez is on the bench as Jay Rodriguez, Adam Lallana and Steven Davis continue behind Rickie Lambert.
John Stammers at St Mary's Stadium: "Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino, as well as keeper Artur Boruc and defender Maya Yoshida, have recently hinted at Saints' Champions League aspirations - indicating there is no reason why they can't qualify for the competition in the not-too-distant future. The Argentine's first priority, though, will be to make 100 per cent sure of the club's Premier League safety. A point this afternoon will take them on to 40, which is considered the magic number for survival. Should they stay up they will become the first newly promoted club to do so after losing their first three matches - with Saints in fact losing their first four this season."
John Stammers at St Mary's Stadium: "Steve Clarke will be a little bit disappointed at West Brom's recent form going into this clash - four matches without victory may be a sign of some relaxation on his players' part in these latter stages of the season. All in all, though, the Baggies manager should be delighted with the team's exerts this season with the club well on course for a comfortable top-half finish."
John Stammers at St Mary's Stadium: "The sun is just about creeping through here at St Mary's, but it is still bitterly cold as the south coast wind fights back while the two sets of players try and warm up on the pitch. As for the fans, the ground is filling up slowly but it's the away supporters making all the noise at the moment."
John Stammers at St Mary's Stadium: "Just one early goal separates the two sides at the break here at St Mary's, with West Brom holding the lead after Marc Antoine-Fortune's scrappy opener. It's been a bit of a weird one since the goal, though, with Southampton looking good on the ball but failing to create any real chances of note. Down the other end, however, Artur Boruc has done well to deny Romelu Lukaku three times as the Baggies look to pick of the hosts on the break."
The first-half has taken place at a frantic place, as Southampton have combined well in attack throughout despite creating few clear chances against a well-organised West Brom defence. The Baggies in contrast have looked to attack quickly on the break and striker Romelu Lukaku has had a string of shots saved by keeper Artur Boruc. When West Brom attack quickly Southampton have on occasion been able to in turn launch a counter attack into the space the Baggies have left, but equally often Steve Clarke's side have been halted at the expense of a free kick or a corner. It was from a corner that Marc-Antoine Fortune put the Baggies ahead following a goal-mouth scramble, resulting in part from the Saints' decision to leave the posts uncovered, but the result is by no means decided and the game looks likely to yield further goals based on the course of the first half.
Playmaker Gaston Ramirez appears in place of holding midfielder Jack Cork in an attacking change from Southampton, and Steven Davis will now play in the centre of the park alongside Schneiderlin.
West Brom take back a win from the St Mary's Stadium having defeated Southampton 3-0 following an intelligent performance away from home. The Saints had good spells of possession and constructed attacks well until late in the match, but the Baggies' neat counter-attacks cut through the home defence throughout the match and Steve Clarke's side deserved the win. Marc-Antoine Fortune netted the first goal after bundling home following a corner, but after assisting the opener Romelu Lukaku went on to receive several chances to extend the lead on the counter attack. The 19-year-old's power and pace in combination with a fluid West Brom attack was too much for Southampton to handle, and he extended the lead mid-way through the second half on the counter. Substitute Gaston Ramirez became frustrated and got himself sent off after lashing out soon afterwards, with Fortune dismissed in the aftermath, before Shane Long netted a third on the break and Danny Fox was dismissed for a dangerous challenge as West Brom underlined their dominance as they collected their first win in five matches.
John Stammers at St Mary's Stadium: "The full-time whistle is met with booing from the home crowd here at St Mary's, with the fans likely to be upset with their side for a fairly poor display as well as the referee for handing out two red cards to their team. Southampton played okay but didn't create any chances of note, leaving West Brom to pick them off on the counter-attack, so they can't really complain about the defeat. As for the red cards, we'll have to wait and see what Mauricio Pochettino makes of them later. Steve Clarke will be very happy indeed with the 3-0 win, on the other hand, although one of his players, Marc Antoine-Fortune, also saw red for his angry reaction to Gaston Ramirez's elbow on Shane Long."
