Distin signs new deal at Everton

29 January 2014 19:05

Everton defender Sylvain Distin has agreed a one-year contract extension until 2015.

Distin made the switch to Goodison Park in a reported £5million deal from Portsmouth in August 2009.

Everton are one of four clubs in England that the Frenchman has appeared for, having had a loan spell at Newcastle United in the 2001-2002 season before enjoying a five-year spell at Manchester City.

Distin, who became the first foreign outfield player to rack up 400 Premier League games, has forged a strong centre-back partnership with Phil Jagielka in recent seasons and has made 177 appearances for the Merseyside club.

The 36-year-old's deal had originally been due to expire in June, but he joins full-back Leighton Baines in committing to Everton, with the England international penning a four-year deal on Monday.

News of Distin's new contract will be a welcome boost to manager Roberto Martinez following a 4-0 defeat at rivals Liverpool on Tuesday, a result that leaves his players four points adrift of the UEFA Champions League places.
