AJACCIO, Feb 4 (SW) - Ajaccio and Nice pulled off big upsets in Ligue 1 on Saturday, defeating Auxerre and Lille respectively to shake things up at the top of the table.
Ajaccio - Auxerre 1-0
With second-placed Bordeaux playing Lyon on Sunday, third-placed Auxerre had a chance to pick up some ground, but failed as they fell third-from-bottom Ajaccio.
The match went scoreless for 82 minutes until Moussa N'Diaye shocked Jacuqes Santini's men with the winner, although the home side still remained in the bottom three despite the victory.
Nice - Lille 2-0
Nice are not strangers to pulling off the occasional upset, and they did it again on Saturday with a win over fourth-placed Lille.
Marama Vahirua put the home side in front on 19 minutes, and with Claude Puel's Lille side reeling, they struck again in the 39th minute as Sébsatien Roudet doubled the advantage.
Paris Saint-Germain - Saint-Etienne 2-2
PSG could have gone level with Lille in fourth place, but were held to a draw at the Parc des Princes by Saint-Etienne.
Frédéric Piquionne put Les Verts into the lead in the 16th minute, but Pauleta leveled for the home side 15 minutes later.
PSG goalkeeper Jerome Alonzo inadvertently punched Helder Postiga's cross into his own net to gift Saint-Etienne a 2-1 lead, but substitute Fabrice Pancrate hit a beautiful strike eight minutes from time to snatch a point for the home side.
Rennes - Monaco 1-3
After being dumped out of the French Cup by fifth-division Colmar during the week, Monaco came back strong and recorded an emphatic road win away to Rennes, Christian Vieri providing the spark.
Arnold Makengo fired the home side into a 25th-minute lead and at the break Monaco regrouped and came out firing after the second-half restart.
Vieri put Monaco level in the 57th minute and then took the lead with his second of the match 10 minutes later. Olivier Veigneau added an insurance goal at the death for the visitors.
Toulouse - Nantes 1-0
Toulouse recorded their first win in five matches as they edged out a feisty Nantes side at home on Saturday.
The winner was scored in the 57th minute as Dominique Arribage found the back of the net to send Nantes to their first defeat in a month.
Lens - Strasbourg 2-1
Ten-man Lens struck late to grab victory from the jaws of defeat against Strasbourg, who were also dumped out of the French Cup by an amateur side.
Kevin Gameiro had put Strasbourg in front in the 51st minute, but Lens' leading scorer Daniel Cousin hit back in the 78th minute to level.
Things got interesting two minutes later when Yohan Demont was sent off for Lens, but Said Khiter struck the winner for shorthanded Lens six minutes from time.
Sochaux - Le Mans 0-0
Le Mans, still with hope of clawing up into the European places in their first season back in the top flight, suffered a setback with a goalless draw at Sochaux.
Sochaux now have just one win in their last nine league matches.
Metz - Nancy P-P
The Lorraine derby between bottom side Metz and Nancy was postponed due to a frozen pitch with no makeup date announced.
