RENNES/CALAIS, Apr 12 (SW) - Rennes and Nantes have joined Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille in the semi finals of the Coupe de France.
Rennes - Montpellier 5-3 aet.
Less than two minutes had been scored when Jimmy Briand opened the score for Ligue 1 side Rennes against Ligue 2 underdogs Montpellier, and this was only a warning for what was yet to come.
Nine minutes later, the visitors levelled the score through Jerome Lafourcade. From here on, both goalkeepers managed to keep the ball away from their nets and extra time was needed to decide the match.
Seven minutes into extra time, it was Olivier Monterrubio to set the score to 2-1, and the same player added another in the 102nd minute.
But Montpellier refused to give up and Lafourcade got one back in the 103rd minute. Rennes continued to be be focused however as John Utaka restored the gap of two, just one minute later.
When Kim Kallstrom scored for 5-2 in the 110th minute, there was no hope left for Montpellier. The guests did get another though, again through Lafourcade in the 111th minute.
Calais - Nantes 0-1
Calais were without a doubt the surprise of the tournament. Playing their league football in Group A of the Ligue CFA, a competition with several second teams of Ligue 1 sides, they particularly shocked France with a win over Troyes in the 32nd finals of the Coupe.
A somewhat fortunate draw allowed Calais to even advance to the quarter finals, where the dream was ended by Nantes.
Until the 89th minute, the hosts managed to keep a clean sheet but the deadlock was finally broken by Frederic Da Rocha, leaving Calais without a chance to reply.
