READING, Dec 28 (SW) - Reading and Sheffield United kept up their pace to earn automatic Premiership promotion with wins over Leicester City and Southampton on Wednesday.
Reading - Leicester City 2-0
The Royals continued to roll and the Foxes continued to struggle at the Madejski Stadium, a venue that looks more and more like it will host Premiership football next season.
The match didn't get its first goal until the hour mark as Kevin Doyle fired home from inside the area and the match was put to rest three minutes from time as Brynjar Gunnarsson scored on a header from Nick Shorey's cross.
Southampton - Sheffield United 0-1
George Burley's home debut with Southampton was no better than his road debut as the Saints fell again to second-placed Sheffield United.
Neil Shipperley gave the Blades victory on 55 minutes as he put the ball in after a brilliant setup by Danny Webber to keep Neil Warnock's side within nine points of the leaders.
Millwall - Watford 0-0
Bottom side Millwall got a point on their new manager's debut against playoff contenders Watford at the New Den.
David Tuttle's side had some good chances go awry as they remain anchored to the foot of the Championship league table.
Stoke City - Leeds United 0-1
Watford's draw allowed Leeds to jump into third place in the league with their win over Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.
Stoke had the best of the chances in the match, but American international Eddie Lewis got in behind the Stoke defense to slot home a Jonathan Douglas cross in the 68th minute for the winning goal.
Michael Duberry had a chance to equalize in second-half added time, but his shot went crashing off the bar, the culmination of Stoke's luck on the evening.
Sheffield Wednesday - Wolverhampton 0-2
If Sheffield Wednesday intend to remain in the Championship, they must avoid results like that on Wednesday, a home loss to sixth-placed Wolves.
Darren Anderton put the visitors into the lead on 33 minutes after a pass by Lee Naylor and Scottish starlet Kenny Miller made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute.
Crystal Palace - Derby County 2-0
Crystal Palace sit fifth with two games in hand in the league table after their victory over Derby at Selhurst Park.
Republic of Ireland international Clinton Morrison put the Eagles in front on the hour mark with a tap-in goal and fullback Darren Ward made it 2-0 in the 41st minute on a volley off a corner kick.
Luton Town - Brighton 3-0
Luton recorded their first win in their last five games as they trounced relegation candidates Brighton at Kenilworth Stadium.
Steve Howard opened the scoring for the Hatters in the 16th minute on Kevin Nicholls' cross and the home side went to half-time up 2-0 after Warren Feeney's 43rd-minute goal before Steve Robinson finished off Albion with a goal on 61 minutes.
Norwich City - Burnley 2-1
The Canaries made it four wins on the trot with victory over Burnley at Carrow Road.
Simon Charlton saw the home side into the lead on the quarter-hour when he fired in off a pass by Youssef Safri, and Darren Huckerby doubled the advantage in the 38th minute after being found by Dean Ashton.
Safri's own goal in the 72nd minute off a shot by Jon Harley pulled Burnley back within reach, but the home side held on for full points.
QPR - Cardiff City 1-0
After a drab first half of action at Loftus Road, the game came to life quickly after the second-half restart as Marc Nygaard hit a headed goal in the 47th minute off a cross by Matthew Rose.
Hull City - Ipswich Town 2-0
Hull are unbeaten in six of the last seven games after their victory over Ipswich at the KC Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Nick Barmby put the Tigers in front in the 55th minute for what was a deserved goal, and the win was capped off a quarter-hour later as Craig Fagan scored in the 70th minute for a 2-0 lead.
Coventry City - Crewe Alexandra 1-1
Third-from-bottom Crewe rescued a point at the death as they held Coventry to a draw on Wednesday evening.
Don Hutchison put the Sky Blues in front in the 32nd minute as hit a gorgeous volley from a cross by Gary McSheffrey, but five minutes into second-half injury time Luke Rodgers hit a header that eluded Coventry goalkeeper Marton Fulop.
Plymouth Argyle - Preston North End P-P
The match scheduled between Plymouth and Preston at Home Park was postponed due to a frozen pitch and will be made up at a later date.
