We're under way in this World Cup qualifying clash.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the World Cup Group G qualifying clash between Latvia and Netherlands at the Daugavas Stadions.
Latvia are well off the pace in their bid to qualify for the World Cup, claiming only five points from their opening six matches. Dainis Kazakevics's men claimed a point last time out against Montenegro on the road, but their hopes in Group G are hanging by a thread. They need a surprise result from somewhere to boost their chances, putting a lot of pressure on the outcome of tonight's contest.
Netherlands have an opportunity to press forward their surge towards the World Cup with a victory tonight. The Oranje were outstanding last time out in Group G to crush Turkey 6-1 on home soil after previously hammering Montenegro 4-0. Louis van Gaal has enjoyed an excellent return to the dugout and his team now have a great chance to edge their way closer to qualification.
LATVIA (4-2-3-1): Roberts Ozols; Roberts Savalnieks, Antonijs Cernomordijs, Kaspars Dubra, Raivis Andris Jurkovskis; Arturs Zjuzins, Eduards Emsis; Alvis Jaunzems, Martins Kigurs, Andrejs Ciganiks; Roberts Uldrikis.
NETHERLANDS (4-3-3): Justin Bijlow; Denzel Dumfries, Stefan de Vrij, Virgil van Dijk, Daley Blind; Davy Klaassen, Frenkie de Jong, Guus Til; Steven Berghuis, Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo.
NETHERLANDS SUBS: Jurrien Timber, Matthijs de Ligt, Tyrell Malacia, Noa Lang, Luuk de Jong, Tim Krul, Maarten De Roon, Ryan Gravenberch, Donyell Malen, Wout Weghorst, Teun Koopmeiners, Mark Flekken.
The players are out on the field and we should be under way shortly.
Louis van Gaal will be satisfied with the scoreline at the break, but he will be demanding more from his team in the second half to kill off the contest. They've dominated possession, but have not taken the game away from the hosts, which could have cost them. Look for the Oranje to discover their cutting edge in the second period.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Latvia are next in World Cup qualifying action on Monday at home to Turkey. Netherlands play the same day at home to Gibraltar.
