We're under way in this LaLiga clash.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga clash between Real Madrid and Villarreal at the Alfredo Di Stefano.
Villarreal will aim to play the role of the spoiler this afternoon for Madrid, although they still have to win to ensure that they qualify for the Europa League next term. Unai Emery's men sit in seventh place and need to better either Real Sociedad or Real Betis' result today. However, the club will also have one eye on their Europa League final against Manchester United next week where they can secure a Champions League berth. They too have won back-to-back matches, beating Real Valladolid and Sevilla, giving them momentum to take into the contest.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Alvaro Odriozola, Eder Militao, Raphael Varane, Miguel Gutierrez; Federico Valverde, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Sergio Ramos, Nacho Fernandez, Marcelo, Andriy Lunin, Isco, Mariano Diaz, Rodrygo Silva, Diego Altube, Antonio Blanco.
VILLARREAL (4-4-2): Geronimo Rulli; Mario Gaspar, Raul Albiol, Pau Torres, Alfonso Pedraza; Yeremi Pino, Etienne Capoue, Daniel Parejo, Manu Trigueros; Gerard Moreno, Carlos Bacca.
VILLARREAL SUBS: Sergio Asenjo, Ramiro Funes Mori, Dani Raba, Pervis Estupinan, Paco Alcacer, Alberto Moreno, Francis Coquelin, Ruben Pena, Jaume Costa, Moi Gomez, Alex Baena, Fernando Nino.
Real Madrid have a simple formula this afternoon, they must win at all costs. Anything other than a victory will see the title handed to their rivals Atletico Madrid and even that might not be enough. If Atletico earn a point from their contest and Madrid earn a win, the title will be theirs on the basis of their head-to-record against their rivals. If Diego Simeone's men win their match against Real Valladolid it's all over anyway for Los Blancos. Zinedine Zidane may have one final ace up his sleeve in potentially his final game, and his side are in good form having beaten Athletic Bilbao and Granada in their last two matches, but the odds are against them.
Madrid were handed a boost when they heard the news that Valladolid had taken the lead against Atletico. However, they have been unable to capitalise due to their lack of potency in the final third. Villarreal have been the better side and as it stands they will qualify for the Europa League. A massive 45 minutes awaits.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Villarreal have a few days to recover from their exploits before they take on Manchester United in the Europa League final on Wednesday. Real Madrid have now ended their hectic campaign and will have a busy summer retooling their squad.
