Krychowiak attempts to take a quick free-kick towards Milik, however, the hosts are alert to the danger and quickly deal with the set-piece over the top. Augustyniak then tries to work it through the middle but England defend in numbers as they look to close out for victory here.
90' +2
Lingard has Bereszynski and Augustyniak around him but still manages to win a corner on the left for the Three Lions. Calvert-Lewin slowly makes his way over and the Everton forward will be tasked with keeping possession in the corner.
90' +1
Walker covers an exceptional amount of ground to race back and shelter the ball out of play, under the pressure of Reca in the left-hand channel. Pope takes a while over the goal-kick as the fourth official announces there will be four minutes of added time.
90'
J. Lingard enters the game and replaces R. Sterling.
Sterling, who tormented Bereszynski all game, wanders slowly off the pitch and Lingard is the man to replace him.
89'
D. Calvert-Lewin enters the game and replaces H. Kane.
Calvert-Lewin gets the briefest of international outings as he takes the place of Kane for the hosts.
86'
A. Reca enters the game and replaces M. Rybus.
R. James enters the game and replaces P. Foden.
Foden, who has put in another good performance for his country, makes way for James.
Sousa goes for a double change straight after Maguire's goal. The first of which sees Reca replace Rybus.
At the same time as Reca's introduction, Grosicki also comes on for Zielinski up top.
85'
K. Grosicki enters the game and replaces P. Zieliński.
H. Maguire has scored a goal for England! Assist by J. Stones.
Stones sneaks in at the back post, teeing up Maguire with a header towards the penalty spot from Foden's corner and the Manchester United centre-back does the rest as he smashes past Szczesny. Has the Manchester City centre-back made amends for his earlier mistake?
GOOOOOOALLLLL!!!! 2-1 ENGLAND! A corner goes long towards the back post, where Stones manages to knock down towards the penalty spot. There, his centre-back partner, Maguire, peels off his man and smashes a right-footed volley past Szczesny in the middle of the goal. The ball goes straight at the goalkeeper but the power behind it sends the ball into the net.
84'
Mount injects some intensity into England's attack, driving in from the left-hand channel and failing to find Kane. The loose ball falls back to Mount and his second effort gets deflected behind for a corner by Glik.
83'
Zielinski twists and turns in the middle of the park, almost teasing the likes of Phillips and Rice in to fouling him. They avoid the temptation and Poland retain possession as this game approaches moves into its final ten minutes.
Minute
Description
79'
Phillips drives his corner right on top of Szczesny inside the six-yard area. The goalkeeper, who has claimed crosses with real authority all game, drops the ball under the pressure of Maguire and Stones but referee Kuipers blows for a foul on the keeper.
78'
Southgate is still yet to make a change as the likes of Calvert-Lewin, Lingard and Watkins all wander up and down the touchline. On the pitch, Mount drills a cross towards the near post and Glik turns away for another corner to the home side.
77'
Phillips swings a free-kick towards the far post, where Maguire meets the cross and looks to redirect a header towards the penalty spot. Szczesny, however, is alert to the danger as he comes out to claim the loose ball above the heads of his defenders.
76'
R. Augustyniak enters the game and replaces K. Piątek.
Bednarek grabs Kane's shirt and referee Kuipers has no choice but to awards the hosts a free-kick. Phillips and Foden once again stand over it but they won't be able to deliver until Poland have made some changes.
Augustyniak is Sousa's next change as he comes on for Piatek.
75'
Foden takes matters into his own hands as he drifts past two or three defenders before going down, courtesy of a loose leg from Glik. The hosts have a free-kick in a great position outside the area and it looks like Foden will be the man to take it.
Phillips allows Foden to take the free-kick as the Manchester City man clips his effort with his left foot straight into the wall.
74'
Maguire goes on a rare wander forward and looks to exchange a one-two with Sterling. The centre-back, perhaps showing the reason he is a defender, fails to return the favour to his team-mate and Bereszynski steps in before clearing long.
71'
Phillips and Foden both fake to shoot before drifting the ball out wide to Walker. The right-back looks to cross but Sterling, who is under pressure from Bednarek, fails to bring the cross down inside the area and struggles to get a shot off.
68'
Bednarked plays back to Szczesny and Kane flies into the former Arsenal goalkeeper with a strong sliding tackle inside the visitors' area. Refere Kuipers blows his whistle to signal a Poland free-kick and the England captain manages to escape without caution.
66'
Sousa will feel his half-time introduction of Milik has now been justified, with the substitute forward assisting Moder's equaliser. The visitors have grown into this game and look a better outfit now they have switched to a four-man defence with an extra man in the middle.
64'
Sterling beats Bereszynski once more but Szczesny is quick off his line to save and parry out for a corner. After a few words from the referee inside the area, Phillips sends in his inswinging corner and Poland manage to clear at the near post.
62'
Phillips delivers his outswinging free-kick but Piatek climbs the highest to firmly head away at the near post. Kane then also looks to cross from deep towards Sterling, however, Szczesny comes out with real authority to collect the ball.
61'
Walker invites the foul of Rybus and the left-back duly obliges as he carelessly brings down the right-back. The hosts have a free-kick in the right-hand channel and Stones wanders up to see if he can make amends for his earlier mistake.
58'
J. Moder has scored a goal for Poland! Assist by A. Milik.
Moder does all the hard work, leading the press and dispossessing Stones. Milik is in the right place at the right time and he collects the stray ball before playing through to Moder, who equalises for the visitors.
GOOOALLLL!!!! 1-1! Stones, who has played out from the back comfortably all game, has plenty of time but takes too many touches and Moder tackles him. The loose ball falls to Milik, who pokes back through to Moder inside the area and the midfielder smashes a left-footed effort into the top right corner past Pope. Given the close range, Pope has no chance of stopping the powerful left-footed strike and Poland are level!
57'
Bereszynski plays an extremely poor diagonal pass over the head of Bednarek and the hosts win a throw-in high up on the right-hand side. Rice tries to bring it forward but he is met by a Polish line of defenders and he rather sensibly plays backwards.
56'
With Jozwiak's introduction, it will now be Bednarek and Glik as the two centre-backs, flanked either side by Rybus and Bereszynski. For now, however, England are keeping possession with relative ease as they look to create some more opportunities.
54'
K. Jóźwiak enters the game and replaces M. Helik.
Piatek puts pressure on Pope after a fairly poor pass backwards by Stones. With the goalkeeper unable to pick the ball up, Piatek relieves the pressure by needlessly fouling the Burnley keeper inside the area.
Helik, who gave away the penalty on Sterling in the first half, comes off for Jozwiak as Sousa looks to change back to a four-man defence and put an extra man in midfield.
52'
Moder arrows a cross towards Piatek and Milik inside the hosts' area but neither forward make good enough contact with the cross and Maguire manages to hook a clearance long. Despite England's dominance, it is important to remember they are only one goal to the good here.
51'
Foden shows incredibly quick feet to receive possession, avoiding the tackle of Rybus and offloading to Walker. The right-back, however, plays a poor pass towards Phillips and England's chance to quickly break fades away.
50'
Despite the wide angle towards the byline, Foden opts to shoot towards the near post. The Manchester City youngster gets it all wrong, however, whipping his left-footed strike high over the wall but also well over the bar.
49'
Mount dances past Bereszynski and Glik then fouls with a rather simple drag on the back of Mount's shirt. The hosts have a free-kick wide on the left and it will be either Phillips or Foden to take.
48'
Mount produces a lovely spin in midfield and clips over the top for Foden. Walker receives the offload and his cross just goes over the head of Sterling at the far post as England start the second half with real intent.
46'
A. Milik enters the game and replaces K. Świderski.
A. Milik gets yellow.
Both sides have returned after half-time and referee Kuipers gets the second half underway!
Sousa looks for a change immediately in the second half, introducing Milik at half-time for Swiderski.
Milik, who has been on the pitch less than a minute, picks up the first yellow card as he needlessly catches Kane late and down the back of the ankle.
45' +1
HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 1-0 POLAND
45'
Bereszynski appears confused by the runs of Sterling and this time the English forward goes inside and shoots towards the far post. His effort gets deflected behind for a corner, which comes to nothing and that looks like it will be half-time at Wembley Stadium.
44'
The visitors look to up the intensity as they press in midfield but Southgate's men play around the press with relative ease. Perhaps due to the half-time whistle coming soon, the home side then opt to play backwards and retain possession.
43'
Sterling beats Bereszynski, darting towards the byline and drilling a left-footed cross towards the near post. Foden looks to get across his man but Glik is there again at the near post to avert the danger before England can capitalise.
42'
Kane goes up for an aerial duel with Glik and ends up on the ground. Despite a fairly strong challenge, the England captain returns to his feet without requiring medical treatment and the home side get play back underway with a short free-kick.
41'
Zielinski feels he is caught by Kane and throws himself to the floor but referee Kuipers shows all his experience as he waves his arms and insists play goes on. That's the second time Zielinski has gone down rather theatrically this half and it appears Kuipers has become wise to the Pole's intentions.
40'
Mount once again causes problems for Bereszynski as he dispossesses the right wing-back inside his own half. Poland then regain possession but have to settle for going long as the hosts press up high and pressure the away side.
39'
Rice wins possession back and shrugs off a few tackles as he roams down the left-hand side. As has been the case for most of the first half, Stones and Maguire then work the ball from side to side as they look to carve out an opportunity by finding the likes of Phillips and Rice in midfield.
37'
Zielinski and Swiderski have swapped flanks but, for the moment, that doesn't matter as the hosts dictate possession in the middle of the park. A smart turn from Phillips loses Krychowiak but Chilwell is then caught offside and the opportunity fades away.
36'
The away side have grown into the game a little in the last few minutes after England's commanding start. Albeit, they are yet to test Pope or break through the defensive lines of Maguire and Stones.
35'
Bednarek seeks out Bereszynski with a diagonal pass towards the right-hand channel. The right wing-back gets to the pass but then strangely opts to play backwards, despite Piatek and Swiderski awaiting a cross inside the hosts' area.
33'
Walker sprints down the right-hand channel on the overlap and manages to stand up a cross towards the back post. Kane outjumps his opposite man, looping a header back towards the far corner but Szczesny comes out to punch high above the head of Sterling.
30'
Sterling goes on another mazy run from inside the left flank, reaching the area and nearly getting a shot away to the left of goal. Bednarek, however, has different ideas as he produces a wonderful last-ditch tackle to dispossess the English forward near the six-yard area.
29'
Pope miscues a left-footed clearance, firing it into the nearby Rice but the West Ham man gets lucky as the ball cannons off him and towards the feet of Walker. The hosts get away with one there but Pope needs to be careful playing out from the back with his feet like that.
28'
Sterling finds himself with acres of space in the left-hand channel and the away side have just one defender in the box. The Manchester City man looks to find his club team-mate Foden inside the area but he appears caught in two minds and Glik manages to clear without Szczesny being called upon.
27'
Moder and Rybus pressure the hosts into a corner but the former gives Walker an easy opportunity to buy a cheap free-kick as he pushes him in the back. Stones takes a while to walk over to the free-kick before playing backwards as England look to retain possession like they have done for much of this game so far.
25'
Maguire puts the ball out of play as he sees Zielinski on the floor in the middle of the park. The Pole, however, returns to his feet without requiring medical attention but the away side still return possession to Pope from the resulting throw-in.
23'
It has been almost the perfect start for Southgate's men so far as they have dominated proceedings and grabbed that crucial first goal. With Poland employing five defenders at the moment, England have done the hard part of getting that first goal and now it will be a case of building on their positive start.
22'
The visitors have a chance to respond immediately through a wide set-piece but Rybus' delivery is poor and England clear their lines rather easily at the near post.
19'
Penalty goal scored by H. Kane for England!
GOOOOOOALLLLL!!!! 1-0 ENGLAND! Kane steps up to the penalty spot, curling his right-footed strike down the middle as Szczesny dives the wrong way to his right. England’s captain claims the goal but the opener is all down to Sterling’s hard work and driving run to win the penalty.
17'
Phillips' first corner is headed away as far as Mount, who drives towards the byline and dinks a cross towards the back post. Unfortunately for the hosts, Stones can't reach the cross and Phillips has to settle for recycling possession backwards.
16'
Chilwell makes good ground to dive and keep the ball in play, stretching to cross towards the near post. Glik, however, stands firm at the near post and deflects away for the first corner of the game.
15'
Although the initial line-ups suggested Foden in midfield and Mount on the right, Southgate has, in fact, gone for the opposite. Mount is operating a little deeper in midfield, often cropping up inside the left-hand channel, while Foden is drifting in from the right to support Kane and Sterling up top.
14'
Rice goes on a rare foray forward, evading two or three tackles before moving a pass out to the left-hand side. Sterling attempts to cut in and cross towards the far post but Bednarek gets in front of Foden to head away.
12'
Chilwell clips a pass over the top of the Poland defence for the run of Sterling into the area but Glik leaps powerfully to head clear. Possession then falls back to the hosts as they continue to dictate the early proceedings of this game.
10'
Foden has the ball in the right-hand channel, ghosting inside and going down inside the area under the pressure of Krychowiak. Referee Kuipers isn't interested as he waves play on but replays show Krychowiak did have a handful of Foden's shirt there.
9'
Pope comes a long way out of his area to race in front of Piatek and slam a clearance into the stands. Maguire and Stones looked a little concerned there but their goalkeeper was quick off his line to avert the danger.
6'
Zielinski rolls through Piatek in the middle of the park but Stones is quick and alert to the danger, diving in with a standing tackle before the forward gets the chance to trouble Pope. Bednarek then smashes into Kane and blocks the England captain from taking a quick free-kick in the right-hand channel.
4'
Mount and Chilwell work space for Sterling, however, the Manchester City's man wastes the opportunity by taking a heavy first touch and Moder intervenes outside the visitors' area.
3'
Walker beats Rybus with ease, racing inside but there are no options to pass to further ahead of him. Maguire and Stones keep possession at their feet as the home side look to carve an opening through the Poland defence, who have started off sitting deep.
2'
Chilwell nearly gets caught out by Bereszynski early doors but the right wing-back fails to keep the ball in play and the hosts get away with it. Stones is then required to tidy up and England work possession from one side of the pitch to the other.
1'
Referee Bjorn Kuipers gets this game underway!
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the World Cup qualifying Group I fixture between England and Poland at Wembley Stadium.
After a 5-0 thrashing of San Marino and an efficient performance away at Albania to win 2-0, England face their largest challenge of the group yet. Poland, who disappointed in a 3-3 draw with Hungary, corrected their wrongdoings by cruising past Andorra 3-0 on the weekend, meaning they have four points from two matches.
ENGLAND (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Ben Chilwell, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Kyle Walker; Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice, Phil Foden; Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Mason Mount.
SUBS: Eric Dier, Luke Shaw, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady, Reece James, Jude Bellingham, Jesse Lingard, Sam Johnstone, Dean Henderson, Ollie Watkins, Kieran Tripper, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
POLAND (3-4-2-1): Wojciech Szczesny; Michal Celik, Kamil Glik, Jan Bednarek; Bartosz Bereszynski, Maciej Rybus, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Jakub Moder; Piotr Zielinski, Karol Swiderski; Krzysztof Piatek.
SUBS: Arkadiusz Milik, Rafal Augustyniak, Paweł Dawidowicz, Lukasz Fabianski, Kamil Grosicki, Sebastian Kowalczyk, Kamil Jozwiak, Przemyslaw Placheta, Karol Niemczycki, Sebastian Szymanski, Kacper Kozlowski, Arkadiusz Reca.
The players are wandering out on to the Wembley Stadium pitch and shortly it will be time for kick-off.
Looking ahead to the next 45, Southgate has an abundance of options off the bench if he opts for fresh legs to against Poland's tiring bodies in midfield. Sousa will be content with his side's performance so far but will be frustrated with the lack of attacking intent and creativity up top. The visitors may look to the likes of Milik or Grosicki off the bench if they are to add some attacking impetus to their ranks in the second half.
That is all from this World Cup qualifying Group I fixture at Wembley Stadium, until next time!
Austria and Romania are England's next opponents, albeit in friendlies, while Poland will face Iceland. Both these teams will then take to European Championship action in June, with Southgate’s side playing Croatia and Sousa’s men going up against Slovakia in their first fixtures.
