Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the FA Cup third-round clash between Arsenal and Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
The shoots of recovery are beginning to emerge from Arsenal's season after reeling off three wins on the bounce. Mikel Arteta was under huge pressure entering the festive period, but the Gunners have responded by defeating Chelsea, Brighton and Hove Albion and West Brom in the Premier League, including a hammering of the Baggies last time out. The Spaniard will be desperate for their form to continue in the defence of their FA Cup crown.
Whereas Arsenal have found their form, Newcastle are struggling to find theirs at the moment. Steve Bruce's men are winless in their last six matches, suffering a 2-1 defeat in their last outing against Leicester City. The Magpies do not have good record in the cup competitions and it will take a special effort for them to knock off the holders based on their current standard of performances.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-5-1): Martin Dubrakva; Emil Krafth, Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett; Miguel Almiron, Jeff Hendrick, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff, Joelinton; Andy Carroll.
NEWCASTLE UNITED SUBS: Matthew Longstaff, Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, DeAndre Yedlin, Jacob Murphy, Mark Gillespie, Elliot Anderson.
ARSENAL SUBS: Bukayo Saka, Alexandre Lacazette, Runar Alex Runarsson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Calum Chambers, Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe, Granit Xhaka.
ARSENAL (4-2-3-1): Bernd Leno; Cedric Soares, David Luiz, Pablo Mari, Kieran Tierney; Mohamed Elneny, Joe Willock; Nicolas Pepe, Willian, Reiss Nelson; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Mikel Arteta will be asking more from his side in the final third. He handed opportunities to Nicolas Pepe, Reiss Nelson and Willian to prove their worth this evening. Pepe has been lively, but there has been a lack of quality from the trio behind Aubameyang. The Gunners need more from them in the second half.
An extra 30 minutes is required to separate the two sides in this FA Cup third-round clash. Newcastle could well have won the game in the dying stages, but Bernd Leno was on hand to deny Andy Carroll to save Arsenal.
Arsenal are next in action at home to Crystal Palace on Thursday in the Premier League. Newcastle travel to Sheffield United in their clash on Tuesday.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
