Gabriel Jesus has scored a goal for Manchester City! Assist by R. Mahrez.
Mahrez's pass earns him his second assist of the night - his third contribution overall.
IT’S A HAT-TRICK FOR JESUS WHO MAKES IT 6-0! Mahrez dispossesses Alan Patrick in midfield and immediately passes it forward for Jesus. Pyatov comes rushing off his line and the Brazil international has the presence of mind to dink it over the keeper! More misery for Shakhtar!
90' +1
The fourth official indicates an additional two minutes at the end of the match! It’ll surely feel like an eternity for Shakhtar.
90'
Kayode bears down on goal but opts to shoot from outside the area, ballooning his effort high over Ederson’s net. It looks like the City goalkeeper will be coming away from the match with a clean sheet!
84'
R. Mahrez has scored a goal for Manchester City! Assist by İ. Gündoğan.
He’s only been on the pitch for 11 minutes, yet Gundogan makes an impression as his pass for Mahrez is the assist!
MAHREZ SCORES TO MAKE IT 5-0! A counter-attack, started by Jesus is kept moving by Gundogan who receives a pass in stride before lofting it to the right-hand side for Mahrez. After controlling the aerial ball with a deft touch, he slots it past Pyatov from an acute angle!
83'
Matvyenko creeps towards the City penalty area and has a strike at goal after being given some room. It’s taken away as Delph closes down and blocks the shot with an outstretched leg – and Shakhtar have to retreat slightly and create something again.
81'
Perhaps Guardiola has one eye on his next fixture as he removed Walker, David Silva, and most recently, Fernandinho. With a crucial game against Manchester United on Sunday, the manager cannot afford to risk his key players any longer in this match.
77'
Wellington Nem enters the game and replaces Taison.
Alan Patrick enters the game and replaces Maycon.
Shakhtar Donetsk use their final-two changes at the same time. First of which is a change in attack as Taison comes off for Wellington Nem.
The second switch is in midfield. Maycon will play no further part in the match – Alan Patrick is his replacement.
76'
F. Delph enters the game and replaces Fernandinho.
Fernandinho is the third player taken off by City tonight, with Fabian Delph seeing the match out.

Minute
Description
73'
İ. Gündoğan enters the game and replaces David Silva.
David Silva is brought off after scoring a goal and earning a penalty. The City captain is given the final-20 minutes off, with Gundogan getting to stretch his legs.
72'
Penalty goal scored by Gabriel Jesus for Manchester City!
AND GO 4-0 UP THEY DO! Jesus’ stuttering run-up sends Pyatov the wrong way, and the forward smashes the ball into the top-left corner of the goal!
71'
PENALTY TO CITY FOR THE SECOND TIME TONIGHT! It’s a clear penalty as Bernardo Silva plays David Silva into the penalty area, and Stepanenko goes to ground quickly, sliding in but missing the ball completely. Manchester City have a chance to go 4-0 up!
69'
Taison – captain of Shakhtar – looks absolutely exhausted as he wanders around in midfield, looking to close down the City centre-backs currently on the ball in the away half. They have spent the entirety of the game chasing, and it’s certainly taken a toll.
67'
Shakhtar finally have a corner and Stepanenko takes, but it’s a really poor effort which doesn’t beat the first man as Mahrez’s defensive header clears away the danger.
65'
Mahrez gets free on the right but instead of putting a cross in, he passes it centrally for David Silva – a poor decision as two Shakhtar players step in to retrieve possession. The match has slowed down considerably, as City look fully confident of the result.
63'
O. Kayode enters the game and replaces Júnior Moraes.
Moraes has been ineffective today, managing only a single shot – though that is partially due to a lack of service. He will be replaced just after the hour, with Kayode his replacement.
61'
Danilo enters the game and replaces K. Walker.
The first change of the match is at right-back, as Manchester City remove Walker for Danilo.
60'
It’s taken by Rakitskiy looking for Krivstov, but City prevent the ball from going anywhere near Ederson as it’s headed away by Laporte.
58'
Moraes wins a foul in midfield after being taken down by Bernardo Silva. It’s too far out for a shot, but it’s in a nice position for a cross on the left.
56'
Fernandinho finds Mahrez on the right with a wonderful and creative launch forward, but the City forward is unable to find David Silva with a pass in the penalty area as a centre-back pops up to clear the danger at the first time of asking.
54'
Laporte finds Sterling on the left with a pass, as the centre-back steps high into midfield. The attack ends in complaints as David Silva gets into the penalty area and goes down presumably under the weight of a challenge from Maycon – but the referee isn’t interested on this occasion.
50'
It took less than five minutes after the interval for Shakhtar to concede, and it’s going to be one of those nights for the away side. Manchester City have put their opponents to the sword quite easily, and still have enough time to double the score if they wanted.
48'
R. Sterling has scored a goal for Manchester City! Assist by O. Zinchenko.
The assist goes to Zinchenko, though his pass didn’t necessarily ease Sterling’s work.
STERLING MAKES IT 3-0! A fantastic solo goal for Sterling, who receives a pass from Zinchenko in central midfield and uses his blistering pace to get through the challenges of both Maycon and Kovalenko before entering the penalty area and curling a shot into the top corner!
47'
Shakhtar start on the front foot, but the ball from Rakitskiy to Ismaily in the City penalty area is hit with too much power – and an early attack fizzles out.
46'
City get the second half underway from the kick-off!
45'
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 SHAKHTAR DONETSK.
44'
Jesus nips in and attempts to win the ball back after a poor back pass in midfield, but his touch is too heavy and he puts it out for a second goal-kick for Pyatov in quick succession.
42'
Sterling wins the ball back near the Shakhtar penalty area after some wonderful pressing, but Bernardo Silva’s incisive pass is a bit too hopeful, and Krivtsov cuts across to intercept.
40'
With five minutes left, it doesn’t look like there have been too many tactical changes on the pitch for Shakhtar, who continue to look second-best. Half-time will be important for Fonseca, who needs to change things in order to inspire a comeback after the restart.
38'
Rakitskiy takes the free-kick, and it’s delivered well to the six-yard box, but enough City defenders are present to make sure that it exits the penalty area swiftly.
36'
Mahrez’s quick feints gets him by Ismaily, but his cross to the six-yard box isn’t of the required standard and Pyatov comes off his line to make a simple catch.
34'
Sterling feeds David Silva, looking for a pass which will slip him through on goal, but Rakitskiy sticks an important leg out to close the space and win the ball.
32'
Jesus is through on goal, but he takes too long to wait for the keeper to commit and his side-foot shot is blocked well by a back-tracking defender! An increasing number of gaps in the Shakhtar midfield are opening up, and it’s now a question of how many the home side will score.
30'
Laporte with an important header! Matvyenko cuts inside and beats Zinchenko before curling a shot towards Ederson, but it doesn’t reach the net as the City centre-back repels it!
28'
The crowd seems to know that they have gotten away with one, as the stadium falls to a bit of a hush. Everyone but the official behind the goal seems to have been aware of the situation, including Guardiola who couldn’t hide his smile in the technical area.
26'
Well, that is a really poor call by the match official. Sterling was clearly not touched by his marker, and his miskick caused him to stumble and fall. Fonseca is absolutely furious on the touchline! The Manchester City winger could have potentially been booked for a dive, but as it stands, Guardiola’s side are in full control.
24'
Penalty goal scored by Gabriel Jesus for Manchester City!
Jesus makes no mistake from the spot, and he sends Pyatov the wrong way before rolling it into the bottom corner! 2-0 Manchester City!
23'
Down a goal, Shakhtar Donetsk have no other option but to come forward and attack – which is particularly difficult if you don’t have the ball long enough to move up the pitch. Fonseca’s team are sitting very deep in order to win the ball but are then out of options as they attempt to pressure Ederson’s net.
21'
Sterling plays a pass to Zinchenko who lifts the return over the top of the defence in the penalty area. The forward somehow manages to keep the ball from going out for a goal-kick, but ultimately concedes a throw to Shakhtar.
19'
So far in the match, Manchester City have over 70% possession, which is a frankly ridiculous stat. Their coolness on the ball and their pressing high up the pitch are essentially phasing the other team out of the game.
17'
Manchester City have the lead, and they once again have possession as they knock it around in midfield comfortably. The attacking spell ends as Bernardo Silva cuts inside and nutmegs a defender before attempting to curl the ball into the net from outside the box. It’s hit far too centrally however and Pyatov makes an easy catch.
13'
David Silva has scored a goal for Manchester City! Assist by R. Mahrez.
Mahrez did fantastically well to get the full-back to open up, allowing him space to put in a low cross. His hard work earns him an assist on the goal.
CITY MAKE IT 1-0! Bernardo Silva plays a pass to the right wing for Mahrez, who twists and turns in front of Ismaily, buying time before he centres a pass to David Silva to tap home the first goal of the match! Less than 15 minutes into the match and the home side have the lead!
11'
Moraes has a shot at goal after Mayvenko plays the striker in. He shifts past Laporte and stings the hands of the keeper who fumbles the first attempt at a catch before gathering his rebound.
9'
Mahrez wins his side a corner which he takes himself. It’s put to the near post and cleared immediately – which is disappointing considering he had both Stones and Laporte to aim at.
7'
Bolbat has possession high up the pitch in City territory, but he is stranded without options and Walker cuts across easily to steal the ball back.
5'
Zinchenko finds Mahrez on the other flank with a wonderfully accurate pass, but he is unable to get the ball to David Silva in the penalty area. Shakhtar smuggle it away – but City are looking very creative in the early moments.
3'
David Silva sprays a ball to the right for Mahrez, whose volleyed touch is hit with too much power for Bernardo Silva to get onto and Pyatov can collect.
1'
It's Shakhtar Donetsk who get the match underway from the kick-off!
Hello and welcome to our LIVE commentary of the Champions League group F fixture between Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk!
The first encounter between these two teams was as one-sided as could be, with Pep Guardiola presiding over a 3-0 victory. It’s been 10 games since Manchester City have experienced defeat - a 2-1 loss to Lyon in the Champions League in mid-September. Nine of those 10 have been victories, a 0-0 with Liverpool the only exception.
First place in the Premier League and first place in their Champions League group, Manchester City will be hoping to seal a birth to the knock-out stages with a win today, coupled with a Lyon victory over Hoffenheim. It will be interesting to see how Guardiola utilises his squad, as his side have an eagerly anticipated Manchester derby against United coming up on Sunday. It would be unwise of the manager to take his foot off the gas in this competition, however, as the Lyon result is proof of the unpredictability of the tournament.
Shakhtar Donetsk are first in their own right, leading the Ukrainian Premier League by eight points, with a goal differential 20 points higher than second-placed Dynamo Kyiv. The Miners have won their three matches that followed their first meeting with Manchester City, scoring eight goals in the process.
Having experienced defeat to an English club on home soil for the first time ever, Paulo Fonseca has no other option but to win today’s match if they have any hope of qualifying for the next stage. Last with a lowly two points, Shakhtar fall behind Hoffenheim having scored two less while conceding an equal amount.
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Leroy Sane, Danilo, Nicolas Otamendi, Ilkay Gundogan, Fabian Delph, Sergio Aguero, Arijanet Muric.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Oleksandr Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte, John Stones, Kyle Walker; David Silva, Fernandinho, Bernardo Silva; Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, the team news has been confirmed! Let's take a look, starting with the home side!
Shakhtar have remained somewhat organised, but the brilliance of City’s fluid attacking play has opened them up on a number of occasions. Pyatov has done well in goal and cannot be held accountable for either goal. In attack is more concerning, as the Miners are unable to keep a foot on the ball and move up the pitch. Though the score may not be insurmountable, it will take an incredible amount of patience and clinical finishing to overcome Guardiola’s well-oiled machine.
Manchester City thoroughly dominated proceedings in the first half, and are deserving of their 2-0 lead, despite getting some help in the process. David Silva’s close-range finish was added to with a Jesus penalty, won by Sterling after the winger went down after kicking the turf – not under the weight of a challenge. Even still, the home side have been absolutely untouchable and should see out the second half without issue.
That concludes our commentary of the Champions League fixture between Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk. We hope you enjoyed it!
Manchester City host a local derby when they play Manchester United on Sunday. Shakhtar Donetsk look to put this beating behind them when they travel to face fourth-place Vorskla in the Ukrainian Premier League.
