We're off! England get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s international friendly between England and Brazil at Wembley.
England head into tonight’s game feeling uncharacteristically confident. A young and relatively untested side impressed in a goalless draw against reigning world champions Germany four days ago, giving fans reasons to be hopeful heading into next year’s World Cup in Russia. However, it remains to be seen whether they can pull off a similar performance against a revitalised and hungry Brazil team.
England qualified for next summer’s tournament comfortably enough and avoided losing any of their 10 games, but they also failed to dazzle during that period. That has continued to be the case under Gareth Southgate, but the Three Lions boss will no doubt have been pleased with what he saw on Friday evening. Another positive display tonight would ensure England are able to end 2017 on a high.
Brazil looked to be in something of a crisis when they were knocked out in the group stages of the Copa America not long after the 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany in their home World Cup, but they’re now back at their best thanks to Tite. The Selecao manager has got his side firing on all cylinders, and they head into tonight’s clash having lost just one of their last 16 games.
After the unpopular and unsuccessful Dunga made way last June, Brazil ran riot in their World Cup qualifying group and became the first side - bar hosts Russia - to book their place in the tournament. They’re once again playing with flair and fluidity, but Tite has brought in much-needed defensive solidity. Japan were the latest side to fall to the Selecao, who will be looking to continue their winning run here tonight.
It’s now almost four and a half years since these two sides last met one another, with that friendly at the Maracana ending in a draw thanks to a late Paulinho equaliser. England were last victorious against Brazil on this very ground back in February 2013, and the win that night brought an end to an eight-game winless run in which their opponents tonight picked up four victories.
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
England XI (3-5-2): Hart; Walker, Gomez, Stones, Maguire, Bertrand; Loftus-Cheek, Dier, Livermore; Vardy, Rashford.
Gareth Southgate has decided to make five changes to the England side that started against Germany, with Joe Hart, Kyle Walker, Joe Gomez, Ryan Bertrand and Marcus Rashford coming into the starting line-up to replace Jordan Pickford, Kieran Trippier, Phil Jones, Danny Rose and Tammy Abraham, respectively.
Meanwhile, Brazil boss Tite has made six alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Danilo, Thiago Silva, Jemerson, Giuliano, Fernandinho and Willian making way for Dani Alves, Marquinhos, Joao Miranda, Paulinho, Renato Augusto and Philippe Coutinho.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 0-0 BRAZIL
Gareth Southgate will no doubt be pleased with what he's seen so far, despite the fact his side were on the back foot for most of the first half. Brazil comfortably dominated possession but struggled to do a great deal with it, resulting in Hart having very little to do. It's been tough for England at the other end, but Vardy and Rashford have both shown glimpses of promise on the break.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 0-0 BRAZIL
Only two teams have managed to pick up clean sheets against Brazil in the last 17 months, so England can be very pleased with their performance tonight. They sat back and defended well to frustrate their opponents, who enjoyed a few decent chances on goal during the second half but, overall, found it difficult to force Hart into action.
At the other end of the pitch, England didn't create too many clear cut chances but started to look much better on the break as the night wore on. Space started to open up for the two wing-backs, and Solanke could have won the game for the hosts if he was able to put away a late opportunity that was smothered by Alisson.
Overall, Southgate will be pleased with how his side performed this evening, and against Germany on Friday. A young and fairly inexperienced team showed great grit and determination on both occasions, allowing them to end 2017 on a positive note after a slightly underwhelming World Cup qualifying campaign.
