Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Burnley at Selhurst Park.
After suffering a disappointing start to life under Sam Allardyce, Palace have embarked on a truly meteoric rise to drag themselves away from the relegation zone and towards the top half of the table. Six wins from their previous nine Premier League games means that they now sit seven points clear of the bottom three, and another victory here today will surely all but confirm their place in the top tier for another year.
During that time, Palace have picked up important wins against fellow strugglers whilst also impressing against the big boys. Tottenham Hotspur may have got the better of the them during the week in a nervy affair on this very ground, but Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been beaten in what has been an excellent April for the south London club. They’ll certainly be feeling confident about their chances of winning again today.
Burnley’s previously impressive home run saw them comfortably shoot away from the relegation zone and into the top half of the table, but it’s been a difficult couple of months for the Clarets, who have managed to win just once in their last 13 league outings. As a result, they now sit in 16th place, dangerously close to the bottom three and in desperate need of a victory.
Burnley are still the only side yet to have won a single game away from home, and no Premier League team has failed to win one in a season since Hull City in the 2009-10 campaign. Their abysmal record away from Turf Moor remains a real concern, and if they aren’t able to improve their record quickly then it could result in them being dragged into a last-minute fight to avoid relegation.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Sam Allardyce has decided to make two changes to the Palace side that started the 1-0 defeat against Tottenham during the week, with Damien Delaney and Patrick van Aanholt coming into the starting line-up to replace Mamadou Sakho and Jeffrey Schlupp.
Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche has made four alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Ben Mee, Joey Barton, Robbie Brady and Andre Gray making way for James Tarkowski, Ashley Westwood, Scott Arfield and Sam Vokes, respectively
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-1 BURNLEY
So far, so good for Burnley, who find themselves in the rare position of leading away from home at half-time. They've certainly played the better of the two sides and deserve to be in front, mainly thanks to their impressive start to the game. The Palace back line have struggled to deal with the aerial threat posed by Vokes and Barnes, both of whom have absolutely tormented Martin Kelly and Delaney when balls are thumped into the box.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-2 BURNLEY
The referee blows his whistle for the final time and the Burnley fans all immediately burst into song. It's no wonder why, as their side have finally managed to win a Premier League away game for the first time this season. They certainly deserve to leave with all three points, and the victory is one that could prove to confirm their place in the league next season.
As for Palace, they also could already be safe from relegation but the defeat leaves them in a precarious position. They remain seven points clear of the bottom three ahead of Swansea City's game against Manchester United tomorrow, and their next clash sees them take on Manchester City away from home. It's set to be a nervy few weeks for the Eagles.
