And we're off! The U.S. is going from left to right across your computer, tablet or phone screen.
U.S. Soccer has the Yanks in a 4-4-2 formation tonight. Brad Guzan is in goal, behind a back line of (R-L) Timmy Chandler, Michael Orozco, John Brooks, and Greg Garza. DeAndre Yedlin is on the right wing, Joe Gyau is on the left, and Alejandro Bedoya and Mix Diskerud are in the middle. Striker Jozy Altidore is partnered by the man of the hour, a certain Mr. Landon Timothy Donovan from Ontario, California.
This will be Donovan's 157th and final appearance for the U.S. national team. Thus ends an international career spanning 14 years, three U.S. coaches, three World Cups, six CONCACAF Gold Cups, two Confederations Cups and a whole mess of frequent flier miles.
Ecuador looks to be lining up in a 4-5-1 formation. Maximo Banguera is in goal, with a back line of J. Carlos Paredes, Luis Canga, Frickson Erazo and Walter Ayovi. In midfield, La Tricolor has Renato Ibarra and Cristian Penilla on the wings, with Segundo Castillo and Cristhian Noboa behind no.10 Juan Cazares. Enner Valencia is the striker.
Donovan is wearing the captain's armband tonight as he ties Estonia's Martin Reim for 10th-most international caps all-time. The USA's all-time leading goal scorer with 57 and all-time leading assist creator with 58, he's behind only former teammate Cobi Jones (164) on the USA's all-time caps list.
Good evening, everyone! This is Goal's live commentary of USA - Ecuador in East Hartford, Connecticut. I'm Goal editor Keith Hickey, and I'll be your guide on this magical journey through non-competitive international soccer.
Beyond Donovan, the U.S. has a pretty forward-looking lineup from Jurgen Klinsmann. The left back and left midfielder, Greg Garza and Joe Gyau, have just one cap each. Donovan and goalkeeper Brad Guzan are the only starters to have celebrated their 30th birthdays, and defender Michael Orozco is the only other player in the XI over 25.
Donovan has been presented with his various mementos by each federation, and now the national anthems are playing.
As Donovan witnesses his final "Stars and Stripes," U.S. fans unfurl what is colloquially known as the BAF - the "big-ass flag."
Altidore heads off after a good performance, replaced by Wondolowski.
31-year-old Wondolowski doesn't seem to fit tonight's secondary theme of trying out youth, but he's on anyway, and wearing the armband.
This game has slowed down somewhat. Ecuador probes around the U.S. area, and Noboa has a halfhearted low shot that Guzan saves.
Goal Ecuador! Valencia lines one up from 30 yards and hits a curling shot that confuses Guzan and finds the corner.
The U.S. gave Valencia way to much time in front of goal, and Valencia punished that with a really difficult knuckleball of a shot.
Oh, what waste! Bobby Wood stole the ball off Carlos Gruezo's mis-kick in a dangerous area and really should have shot, but he tries to pass to Wondolowski and makes a complete mess of it.
Halftime. Landon Donovan's U.S. career is over, but the Stars-and-Stripes are up 1-0 thanks to Mix Diskerud's early goal.
So that's it from us! a 1-1 draw between the USA and Ecuador as Landond Donovan finishes off a glorious international career. Mix Diskerud and Enner Valencia with the goals tonight.
