Roma are throwing plenty of players forward here as they search for a late equaliser, but United block a sequence of shots, but Sanabria fires wide of the mark.
90' +1
There will be at least two minutes of added time here.
89'
Penalty goal scored by F. Totti for Roma!
GOAL!!! Roma pull to within one goal of United as Totti steps up and unsurprisingly dispatches the penalty with minimal fuss. Can they snatch a late equaliser and force penalties?
88'
PENALTY TO ROMA! Cole drills the ball into the area and Sanabria's control hits Michael Keane on the arm and the referee points the spot.
86'
Crucial interception by Balasa! Young runs at Cole down the right, and after being shown inside, he again looks to take the ball round the outside of the left-back. Young fires in an inviting cross and Will Keane looks destined to tap in, but Balasa pokes it away at the crucial moment.
84'
GREAT SAVE BY AMOS! United do themselves no favours as Borriello finds it too easy to beat Michael Keane in the air at the back, nodding the ball into the danger zone. Castan controls on the chst and then produces an over-head kick, which is tipped on to the post by Amos.
82'
Roma's counter fails to bear fruit and United are momentarily back on the attack. Lingard moves across the edge of the Roma area and plays Nani into the left side of the box. The Portugal winger cuts in on to his right foot and shoots, but his effort is tame and Skorupski saves with ease.
81'
Nani and Lingard stand over the free-kick and the latter fires it straight into the wall. What a waste. Roma, meanwhile, attempt to launch a counterattack.
80'
Lingard, who has been anonymous since coming on, finally gets himself involved in the middle and he wins a free-kick on the edge of the Roma area.

Description
79'
United have not been very good at all in the second half. Their formation looks a mess, with numerous players playing completely out of position. Nani appears to be right up in attack with Keane and Hernandez, but the service to them has been dreadful, with Young and Shaw offering very little from an attacking perspective.
77'
Amos looks nervous once again as he skews a first-time clearance following a back-pass. Roma pour men forward into the final third, but Blackett does well to block Borriello's eventual shot.
75'
M. Pjanić has scored a goal for Roma!
GOAL!!! PJANIC SCORES FROM HIS OWN HALF! Roma have pulled one back, but the real story here is the sheer audacity of the goal! Pjanic, who has been on for only a few minutes, was well inside his own half and somehow manages to send a pinpoint effort over Amos and into the United goal. Admittedly, the United goalkeeper's positioning was poor, but that is an incredible strike.
74'
Excellent defending by Smalling as he charges into the Roma half, charging down a couple of clearances, before stealing possession back from Ashley Cole. He then combines well with Young to keep United on the ball.
72'
Good play by Totti as the Roma captain drops deep to the centre of the pitch and then lofts a pass in behind the United defence for Borriello, but the forward is unable to reach it.
70'
And now United make one more change as Van Gaal appeases the crowd by bringing on Hernandez, who replaces Cleverley.
69'
Pjanic, Sanabria, Totti, Balasa and Borriello are on, while Ucan, Florenzi, Destro, Keita and Benatia have gone off.
67'
Young whips in a fierce delivery from the corner, but Skorupski comes out and plucks the ball from the air in confident fashion. Roma are readying another batch of changes in the meantime.
66'
United are enjoying a period of possession now, though. Kagawa looks composed in the middle, but he is quick to offload the ball in an attempt to keep the move flowing. United eventually win themselves a corner down the left.
64'
This second half really has not got going yet. The large quantity of changes won't have helped, but neither side is looking particularly dangerous going forward.
62'
Ucan gets involved again, this time in the attacking third as he receives a cut-back from Ljajic on the right. Ucan steps on to the pass and hit a low show after controlling the ball, but his effort slides well wide of the mark.
60'
Good feet from Ucan as the Turk slips away from Nani just inside his own half, but he gets himself into a muddle soon after and Lingard sticks a foot in, taking possession back for United.
58'
Ljajic steps up and takes the free-kick. The delivery is curled into the danger zone and, although it misses all of his team-mates, the ball almost sneaks under the crossbar. Nevertheless, Amos watches it glide harmlessly over the goal.
57'
Young finds his name go into the referee's book after catching Castan with a late challenge just inside his own half. Young looks unimpressed, but it was a heavy challenge.
55'
Roma also made a few changes at the break, with Somma, Castan, Cole, Nainggolan and Ljajic all coming on.
53'
Clever play by Ljajic as the Serbian turns Cleverley inside-out on the right flank and then crosses in towards the penalty spot. Florenzi meets the ball with a half-volley, but he fires just wide.
51'
Will Keane is adamant he should have a penalty as he manages to rob the ball off Castan in the area and is then hauled down, but the referee awards a free-kick the other way.
49'
Roma are straight out on to the front foot and they get forward down the left, but Destro fires into the side-netting after receiving a cut-back from Florenzi.
47'
The only United players to remain on the pitch are Blackett and Cleverley. Amos, Smalling, Keane, Shaw, Nani, Kagawa, Young, Will Keane and Lingard are all on.
46'
We are back underway for the second half. Both sides have made changes, with nine United players coming on.
45' +1
W. Rooney has scored a goal for Manchester United!
45'
HALF-TIME!
44'
GOAL!!! United get a third right before the break! Rooney steps up and coolly dispatches the penalty, sending Skorupski the wrong way, giving Van Gaal's men a resounding lead at the break.
43'
PENALTY TO UNITED! Very clever interchange on the edge of the Roma area between Herrera and Welbeck sees the forward released into the box and subsequently brought down.
41'
For the first 35 minutes or so, United rarely looked like scoring. But two moments of Rooney-inspire magic see them take a two-goal lead just before half-time. Roma must be wondering where that came from.
39'
Mata has scored a goal for Manchester United!
GOAL!!! MATA DOUBLES THE LEAD! Rooney appears back inside his own half and produces a fine lofted pass in behind the Roma defence, who were surprisingly deep. Nevertheless, Mata brings the ball down well and lifts a delightful effort over Skorupski in expert fashion, and the ball clips the left-hand post on its way into the net.
38'
United have definitely gone up a gear in the last few minutes. They carve open Roma again down the right as Valencia picks an excellent pass into the edge of the area for Mata, but his toe-poked effort is saved well by Skorupski.
36'
W. Rooney has scored a goal for Manchester United!
GOAL!!! GREAT HIT FROM ROONEY! United take the lead in Denver as Rooney finds the net in style! Welbeck does brilliantly to hold play up, keeping Benatia at bay before offloading the ball. Rooney runs back across the edge of the area towards the right and then lets fly from 25 yards, sending an unstoppable effort into the top-left corner.
34'
The referee stops play for a moment as Welbeck and Ucan find themselves on the floor. The United man was seemingly pushed by Benatia when trying to control the ball and he subsequently crashed into Ucan after losing his balance.
32'
Yet again Destro latches on to a pass over the United defence. He gets beyond Blackett, pulls the ball back and waits for support. James pokes the ball away, with Ucan on hand to control, but his first-time effort is saved easily by Johnstone.
30'
United cut out a Roma attack, but they almost play themselves back into a dangerous situation. James passes back to Johnstone and the goalkeeper plays a first-time kick out to Welbeck on the left. It is misjudged and lands near Iturbe on the edge of the United area, but Blackett mops up with a vital interception.
28'
Roma get themselves a free-kick on this occasion. Herrera gives Paredes a bit of a kick and, although the Argentinian throws himself to the floor, the referee correctly awards a free-kick.
27'
Strong tackle from Calabresi as he catches Welbeck, who flicked the ball away too quickly for the Roma defender. Calabresi sees his name go into the referee's book.
26'
We are back underway. Van Gaal claimed during the World Cup that such breaks were beneficial to him for tactical reasons as the Netherlands reached the semi-finals. Can the break have a similar outcome today?
25'
We are having a brief pause in play now as the two teams take on fluids in Denver's immense heat.
23'
Paredes does take the free-kick, but the ball clips the wall and goes out for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Johnstone comes out well and claws the ball out of the area in commanding fashion.
22'
Iturbe is caught late by Herrera about 25 yards from the United goal and Roma subsequently win themselves a free-kick. A couple of players stand over it, but Paredes looks the most likely to take a swing.
20'
There is not much of a tempo to this match at the moment, but Roma have looked slightly better. Destro has threatened on several occasions, while United's forward have contributed very little until now.
18'
Almost immediately at the other end, Welbeck shows iniative to charge down a Skorupski clearance and he takes possession back in the Roma area. However, the forward's cut-back towards Rooney is intercepted and the attack ends.
17'
A hospital pass from Cleverley in his own half gives Roma a great chance to take the lead. Ucan races towards the United area with two in support, but he tries to do it all by himself and Evans faces him up well, making a crucial block.
15'
Positive play by Jones as he receives the ball from Rooney just inside his own half and then marches forward, skipping past Iturbe and then charging beyond a couple of midfielders. In the end, though, his poked pass through towards Welbeck is terrible and Roma get a goalkick.
13'
Space opens up for Welbeck as he receives a pass just inside the Roma half, but instead of looking out to the right or involving Rooney in the attack, he tries to go it alone and he is swiftly tackled. His partner in attack is not impressed.
11'
Good defending by James. Ucan does well to keep possession on the left, before lofting a pass over towards the right for Destro to chase. The Roma man beats the United left-back to the ball, but James is quick to win dispossess his counterpart.
9'
The lively Destro almost finds himself with a good opportunity once again as he looks to latch on to a throughball played between Jones and Evans, but the Johnstone just about wins the race and the forward is then flagged offside.
8'
United's passing has been unimpressive so far. Mata and Herrera have been quiet, while the former has wasted possession on a couple of occasions, most recently when searching for Reece James out on the left.
6'
Very good start from Roma. United impressed against LA Galaxy, but the Serie A are going to be a far tougher nut to crack today, a fact which has been made very evident from the opening six minutes.
4'
Destro goes close again for Roma. Ucan was given acres of space in the middle and he broke into the edge of the area. Herrera tracked back and poked the ball away with a good tackle, but Destro hit a first-time effort just over.
2'
DESTRO GOES AGONISINGLY CLOSE! The Italian forward does well to bring down a lofted ball on the stretch, breaking United's offside trap and then lifting a good effort over the approaching Johnstone, but the ball bounces just in front of the goal and goes over.
1'
Off we go! Roma get the match started.
Hello and welcome to the LIVE text commentary of the pre-season International Champions Cup meeting between Manchester United and Roma. The Sports Authority Field in Denver is the setting for today's game and I, Ryan Benson, shall be describing the action for you.
CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
Manchester United starting XI: Johnstone; Jones, Evans, Blackett; Valencia, Herrera, Cleverley, James; Mata; Rooney, Welbeck.
Manchester United substitutes: De Gea, Lindegaard, Amos, Smalling, Shaw, Michael Keane, Fletcher, Young, Zaha, Nani, Kagawa, Lingard, Will Keane, Hernandez.
Roma subs: Lobont, De Sanctis, Svedkauskas, Golubovic, Cole, Nainggolan, Castan, Ljajic, Totti, Pjanic, De Rossi, Somma, Balasa, Pettinari, Sanabria.
United will be looking to produce a similar display today to the one they produced just a few days ago when they thumped LA Galaxy 7-0 in Pasadena in Van Gaal's first match as the first-team coach. New signing Ander Herrera stole the show with an impressive display and he starts again today. Van Gaal confirmed in his pre-match press conference that only two players - Tom Cleverley and Tyler Blackett - will play the full 90 minutes, with a host of changes expected at the break.
Roma, meanwhile, will be aiming to put on a better show than the one they produced against Liverpool in the opening game of their US tour. The Italians came out 1-0 winners thanks to Daniel Agger's late own-goal, but neither side impressed in Boston. Big-money signing Juan Iturbe makes his second start, but Rudi Garcia's team looks particularly young, with Skorupski, Calabresi, Romagnoli, Paredes and Ucan all starting.
In a surprising move, Cleverley captains United today as he prepares to play the full 90 minutes. Rooney, one of the favourites to get the armband on a permanent basis, starts in attack, but once again he misses out on leading the team on to the pitch, after Fletcher captained against Galaxy.
The teams are out on the pitch in Denver.
The referee allows little stoppage time at the end of the first half and United take a 3-0 lead into the break, something which few would have bet on ten minutes ago. The first 35 minutes of the match were fairly uneventful, certainly from United's perspective. Nevertheless, the Premier League side cranked things up a notch with Rooney's opener, a stunning effort from 25 yards and Mata swiftly added a second, cleverly looping the ball over Skorupski. Rooney doubled his tally just before the break from the penalty spot, leaving Roma with a mountain to climb if they are to salvage something in the second half.
The referee blows his whistle to end the match and United claim a 3-2 win in their first International Champions Cup match, but it could -- and perhaps should -- have been much more comfortable. United found themselves three goals up at the break thanks a Rooney double and Mata's clever lob, but after a host of changes at the break, Van Gaal's men were much less impressive. Roma continuously threw men forward and pulled two back, first through Pjanic's incredible effort from inside his own half, and then Totti's late penalty. United take a win away from Denver ahead of their next meeting with Inter on Tuesday, but Van Gaal will not be pleased with the second-half display.
I hope you have enjoyed the action. Farewell until next time.
