United win a goal kick and De Gea hammers it forward. Van Persie flicks it on but it goes to a yellow shirt, and the visitors come forward before Giaccherini draws a foul off Jones. Is that it?
90' +3
Sunderland are so, so close to victory here. They have a free kick just inside their own half, and Mannone launches it forward before Altidore does well to hold it up and win a throw deep inside the United half.
90' +2
Altidore is penalised this time as he fouls Evra, and the full-back squares to De Gea, who gets his clearance all wrong and the visitors have a throw inside the United half. Two minutes of stoppage time down; we've got two more to go.
90' +1
N. Vidić gets yellow.
Oof, that's a silly one by Vidic. The United skipper charges in on Altidore and cleans the striker out right on the touchline. On another day, that could have been a red.
90'
Januzaj tries to inspire something as he crosses from the left, Fletcher's header is cleared but it comes out to Carrick, but his shot is charged down by Cattermole, who throws absolutely everything at it.
89'
Evra moves into an advanced position on the flank, but Vergini is again their to cover before winning a throw off the United man. Into the final minute of normal time...
88'
Carrick looks for Van Persie with another measured pass, but Vergini reads the play well and charges in to cut the ball out. United's challenge in this game is going out with a bit of a whimper.
87'
There's a break in play as Borini and Evra clash heads in the air. This will add minutes on to the end. Giggsy Time, anyone?
86'
Hernandez slides a lovely ball through the defence for Van Persie inside the box, but again he strays offside and the flag goes up. Sunderland survive again.
85'
Giggs is still on the touchline but is looking a little lost. His side just haven't been very good today. Sunderland are five minutes away from their first win at Old Trafford since 1968.
Minute
Description
84'
BORINI OFF THE BAR!! The Sunderland fans are cheering every pass now, and Giaccherini slides a lovely pass through for Borini, who cuts on to his left and curls a beautiful effort past De Gea, but it doesn't beat the woodwork as it rattles back off the bar.
83'
A priceless period of possession for the visitors, now, as they run the clock down and pass it along the back. United press but Poyet's men look assured on the ball.
82'
De Gea is a lonely man right now as United continue to play inside the Sunderland half. Their sheer domination of possession has been bettered by the Black Cats' discipline and organisation, though.
81'
HERNANDEZ!! Great chance to level it!! Evra finds space on the left after a lovely pass from Carrick. The full-back pulls the ball back to Hernandez, who spurns a glorious chance by scooping his effort well over the bar with his left foot.
80'
Carrick looks for Welbeck with an early ball beyond the defence, but it's not accurate and goes out for a through amid groans from the stands. There's just not been enough quality from United this afternoon - or this season, in fact.
78'
The hosts are STILL dominating possession, but they can't find a way through Sunderland. Hernandez flicks a lovely ball on for Van Persie, but the Netherlands striker is just a yard offside and the flag goes up.
77'
WELBECK!! Fletcher plays the ball out wide to the substitute, who cuts inside before firing a venomous effort from 20 yards which fizzes just over Mannone's crossbar.
75'
The visitors keep the ball away but Mannone then fluffs his lines, slicing a clearance straight out for a throw to United. Are the hosts going to get another chance?
74'
L. Bridcutt enters the game and replaces S. Larsson.
How this is still 1-0, I'll never know. Two superb opportunities in short succession! Liam Bridcutt is on for the visitors as Poyet looks to tighten things up for the final 15 minutes or so.
73'
VAN PERSIE!! Sunderland almost pay for their misses as Welbeck lays off to Jones, who fires in a low cross which Van Persie meets at the near post, getting in front of Mannone well but diverting it just wide.
72'
GIACCHERINI AND COLBACK!! SO NEARLY 2-0!! Altidore and Borini link up brilliantly before the substitute fires the ball into the area. Giaccherini meets it with a first-time effort which flicks out off the post. Colback collects it before shooting from a tight angle, and his effort rifles into the side netting. What a chance!
71'
The hosts' pressure continues, and everyone bar De Gea is inside the United half. Carrick wastes possession, though, as he fires the ball straight out for a goal kick with no-one wide to aim for.
70'
Giaccherini plays the ball forward and Colback chases it well, but ends up fouling Jones and the hosts have possession once more. Time is quickly running out for Giggs' men.
69'
Januzaj turns into a defender momentarily as he tracks back before producing a wonderful tackle to dispossess Giaccherini. He's worked very hard since coming on but United still look poor going forward.
68'
Sunderland have a rare opportunity inside the United half as they win a throw near the corner flag. They're quickly forced backwards into their own half under good United pressure, but Poyet's men are keeping the ball well for now.
67'
D. Welbeck enters the game and replaces A. Young.
Januzaj swings in the free kick and it flicks off the head of Borini before O'Shea hacks it clear. The hosts come back, though, and Vidic challenges for the ball before it drops to Jones, who fires a first-time effort way over the bar.
66'
R. van Persie enters the game and replaces Mata.
United win a free kick on the left-hand side and this is a good chance to whip the ball in. Meanwhile, Robin van Persie is back for the hosts as he and Danny Welbeck replace Mata and Young. It's an attacking change from Giggs, who wants his side to at least restore parity.
65'
J. Altidore enters the game and replaces C. Wickham.
A rare bit of respite for the visitors as they push into the United half, but Johnson loses out as the hosts win a throw. Just 25 minutes left for Poyet's men to hold on for a remarkable win.
64'
Change for Sunderland as Wickham goes off to be replaced by Jozy Altidore. The striker hasn't netted today but it was his cross that set up Larsson's volley.
62'
SHOULD BE 1-1!! A real scramble in the box!! The ball is fired in from a corner and Vidic is there in the six-yard box before laying down to Jones, who slices his effort before Carrick heads down at goal. Mannone can't gather and Vidic tries to win it but three Sunderland players manage to eventually get it away.
61'
Fletcher does really well to evade two Sunderland players before sliding a pass through for Carrick. He spreads it wide to Januzaj, whose cross is far to heavy and it goes out the other side.
60'
We've hit the hour, and Sunderland are still looking organised amid constant United possession. The hosts need to change their approach to break the visitors down - the crossing has to improve.
59'
The corner is cleared but United come straight back. Young again, though, produces a very disappointing cross which evades everyone and goes behind for a corner.
58'
Emanuele Giaccherini is on for Johnson as the United pressure goes on. Mata floats a lovely ball into the box for Hernandez, but Brown is there to cut it out and divert it behind for a corner to the hosts.
57'
E. Giaccherini enters the game and replaces A. Johnson.
Januzaj has definitely added something on that left-hand side for United. He's looked bright since coming on but needs his team-mates to up their game somewhat.
56'
Jones and Young link up well on the right-hand side, but it's another poor cross as the former's delivery fails to beat the first man and Sunderland clear.
55'
MANNONE!! Januzaj picks the ball up on the left and moves in towards the area. He has a chance to cross but goes it alone, and cuts on to his right before seeing his shot blocked behind for a corner. The Sunderland goalkeeper then completely fluffs a catch from the set piece, but fortunately for him Alonso is there to clear.
54'
United have started to ramp up the pressure, with several passes inside the Sunderland half, but it's still all in front of the visitors. They look very well organised, and Johnson battles hard to win the ball before clearing away.
53'
Fletcher looks for Young out on the right-hand side, but again it's all too easy for Sunderland to deal with and Alonso cuts it out comfortably.
52'
A. Januzaj enters the game and replaces Nani.
It's an early change from Giggs as he hauls off Nani, who has been pretty ineffective in the United midfield. Adnan Januzaj is on in his place - can he inspire a comeback?
51'
HERNANDEZ!! It's a glorious chance for United as Evra charges down the left and fires a low ball across the box. Hernandez meets it just yards from goal but Brown challenges superbly to divert it behind for a corner.
50'
The hosts are again enjoying more possession, but a lot of it is inside their own half at the moment. The likes of Mata and Young aren't producing good deliveries and something needs to change if they are to score today.
49'
Sunderland again do well to hold their shape and United are forced backwards, prompting impatient groans from the stands. They haven't had much to cheer about this afternoon.
48'
Larsson poaches the ball away from Fletcher in midfield and Sunderland have possession. The hosts are pressing a bit harder, and higher up - something Giggs has clearly mentioned during the break.
47'
Nani catches Vergini in possession but it's mopped up by Brown, who hammers the ball forward. The visitors are starting the half well but possession is changing hands pretty regularly as it's a little bit scrappy early on.
46'
Poyet's men get the ball rolling and we're back underway. No changes at the break for either side.
45' +1
That was United's best chance of the half, and it wasn't even that good a chance. It's a damning indictment of their display so far this afternoon.
45'
MATA!! Good work from Hernandez, who charges in from the right and looks for Nani with a decent ball, but Cattermole is there to clear. The hosts come back, though, and Nani flicks the ball out of the area for Mata, who drills a low effort at goal which Mannone saves well.
43'
Jones gives the ball away in midfield this time and Alonso spreads it out to Vergini, who plays forward to Johnson and the winger forces a throw. The hosts look happy to see out the rest of the half as it is now.
42'
De Gea shanks a clearance and Johnson has a glorious chance to run into the area, but he completely wastes it as he tries to wrong-foot Vidic, who stands firm and easily deals with the winger. It's not been a brilliant afternoon from him so far.
41'
Ferdinand dinks the ball over the top looking for the run of Nani, but O'Shea is in control as he reads the pass and heads it away. United look pretty stale going forward.
40'
Fletcher stops Vergini in his tracks and the hosts win possession once more. Mata then spreads it wide to Young with a lovely pass forward, but yet again the final ball is poor as his cross deflects off Vergini.
39'
Approaching the final five minutes of the half, then, and Sunderland are looking more and more worth their lead. They are very disciplined at the back and United are already running out of ideas.
38'
Johnson gets into a really good position as he escapes Evra on the flank, but his delivery is awful as he can't find either of two team-mates in the box, instead giving it straight to Ferdinand who hacks it clear.
37'
Lovely work from Young, who tries his luck on the left and cuts inside Vergini before firing a low ball into the six-yard box, but Larsson watches it well and clears from in front of the near post.
36'
Cattermole escapes a booking as he slides in on Mata, giving the hosts a free kick inside the Sunderland half. They take it short and continue to pass it in front of the visitors.
35'
United have the ball again and they are constantly in control of the ball, but they still can't find their way through a resilient Sunderland side.
34'
Alonso produces a risky bit of defending as he charges in on Hernandez near the by-line inside the area, but nothing is given as the ball trickles behind for a goal kick.
32'
It's a real sucker punch from Poyet's men, who are loving life at the moment. United turn up the pressure once more but Sunderland are still holding their shape well and keeping the hosts at arm's length.
31'
Marcos Alonso gets yellow.
30'
S. Larsson has scored a goal for Sunderland! Assist by C. Wickham.
GOOOALLLL!! LARSSON!! De Gea clears the ball but not very far and Wickham swings in a cross from the corner. Larsson is there to meet it and fires a lovely volley beyond De Gea and into the net.
29'
Mata picks it up on the left but spurns the opportunity with a very poor delivery into the area, and Brown cuts it out easily. For all their pressure, United haven't been particularly good in the final third so far today.
28'
Giggs has marched down to his technical area for the first time this afternoon. He's realised the visitors are growing in confidence and doesn't want to see their early pressure go to waste.
27'
Johnson fires the free kick forward but it's a pretty poor delivery out to the right. The visitors keep it though, and Vergini finds Alonso, who fires an effort off target from just outside the box.
26'
M. Carrick gets yellow.
Borini is on the deck again as Carrick slides in unnecessarily, and the referee dishes out the first yellow card of the afternoon. The visitors might look to float this one into the United box...
25'
Ferdinand again provides a timely interception, cutting out a ball intended for Wickham. Sunderland - although they've not had much time in the United half - also look fairly comfortable on the ball.
24'
The hosts are camped outside the Sunderland box and the crowd responds with an increase in volume. Hernandez fires in a cross looking for Mata, but it's cleared and Borini does well to get to the ball first, before winning a free kick off Vidic to allay the pressure.
23'
Sunderland had a decent short spell around 10 minutes ago, but that's dissipated completely and United are monopolising possession. They are still maintaining a decent shape though, and the hosts aren't finding it easy to get through.
22'
Nearly an embarrassing moment for Mannone as he races out to meet Carrick's long ball forward, but he misjudges the bounce and it goes past him. Hernandez is chasing hard but the ball bounces off the surface and races behind for a goal kick.
21'
It's been a pretty comfortable afternoon for United so far. They'll be disappointed not to have created many chances but they seem in control of proceedings at Old Trafford.
20'
EVRA!! The United pressure continues to increase and they win a corner. Evra is always dangerous at set pieces and he charges in late to win the ball, but his header is straight down the middle and Mannone gets down to save it fairly comfortably.
19'
NANI!! So close!! The United counter takes Sunderland by surprise and Nani cuts in from the left before sliding a pass through for Mata. The Spaniard's cross is headed away and Carrick shanks his volley, but it falls for Nani who blasts a shot inches wide of the post.
18'
The visitors have a free kick just inside the United half, and Larsson floats it into the ara looking for O'Shea, but Vidic is there to head away and Giggs' men come forward.
16'
O'SHEA!! Mata spreads the ball wide to Jones, who is getting forward very well for United so far. Sunderland quickly find their shape and the hosts are forced to slow down the attack, but they come back and Carrick fires a low ball in from the right. O'Shea sticks out a leg and is very close to putting it into his own net, but it goes wide of the far post.
15'
Poyet is already down on the touchline, barking orders at his men. The visitors have looked bright in their fleeting moments going forward, but are also vulnerable on their left-hand side.
14'
JOHNSON!! First decent effort of the match as the winger cuts in from the right and changes gear, charging towards the middle before firing a 30-yard effort just wide of De Gea's far post.
13'
Borini does well to help out on the flank, and manages to stop Young in his tracks before winning a free kick for the visitors right on the touchline. He's going to have to do a lot of running down that side today.
12'
This is a very impressive opening spell from United, and again they come down the right-hand side - Alonso is struggling. Jones is there this time and whips a decent ball in, but Young can't direct his header near the goal and it's a goal kick.
11'
Johnson lifts the ball through the middle looking for Wickham, but Ferdinand watches it well and manages to hook it away to stop the danger.
10'
Sunderland are struggling to get out of their own half and United are pressing well. Colback spreads it wide to Alonso, but the hosts keep their shape and Poyet's men are forced backwards.
9'
More bright stuff from the hosts as Young causes problems for Alonso again. The ball drifts inside and eventually runs loose for Mata, who fires a shot from 20 yards which slices well wide of goal.
8'
This is better from Sunderland, who move into the United half for the first time. Johnson collects it in the middle and spots the run of Borini, but his floated ball has too much on it and De Gea can gather.
7'
Nani cuts inside from the left and his cross deflects high up into the air. Young is there to meet it and he tries to score one of the most spectacular goals in history, but his first-time volley doesn't connect properly and Mannone collects the ball easily.
6'
Carrick and Larsson battle in midfield, but the latter ends up hauling the United man over and the hosts have a free kick just inside the Sunderland half.
5'
Jones pushes high up the pitch and tries an early cross from just outside the box, but it's not a good delivery and Mannone is there to gather safely, averting the danger for now.
4'
Colback tries a long ball across the pitch but gets it all wrong. Nani is there to intercept but it just bounces over his head and the chance to counter goes away.
3'
Young forced a corner off Alonso and Mata whips the ball in, but there's a mass of yellow shirts in the box and Sunderland manage to hack the ball clear.
2'
It's a good early start for United, who are keeping the ball well and forcing the visitors back into their own half. Nothing meaningful yet, but the hosts have been bright.
1'
Manchester United get the ball rolling, and we're underway.
Hello and welcome to LIVE coverage of the Premier League as Manchester United host Sunderland at Old Trafford. Ryan Giggs kicked off his tenure with a 4-0 win over Norwich - can he add a second victory to that this afternoon?
The teams have been announced so let's bring you the line-ups, starting with the hosts...
Manchester United (4-4-1-1): De Gea; Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Nani, Carrick, Fletcher, Young; Mata; Hernandez.
Man Utd subs: Amos, Smalling, Valencia, Fellaini, Januzaj, Welbeck, Van Persie.
Giggs makes five changes from his first game in charge against Norwich, but it's the same back four that kept a clean sheet in their rout over the Canaries. Nani, Darren Fletcher, Ashley Young and Javier Hernandez all come in, while Juan Mata's brace last week also earns him a start. Robin van Persie makes the bench for the Red Devils this afternoon.
Gus Poyet, meanwhile, names the same side that comfortably beat Cardiff last weekend, and it is the same XI for the fourth game in a row as in-form striker Connor Wickham leads the line once more. The striker has scored five in his last three appearances in the Premier League, having netted just once in his first 37.
This is the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, after the Black Cats beat United on penalties in the League Cup semi-final. Each game has finished 2-1 this term, so will we see that for a fourth time?
Poyet's men are without a win in 23 league matches against United, but have been in resurgent form of late. They held Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium before becoming the first team to beat Chelsea at home under Jose Mourinho, so they will be in confident mood this afternoon,
The teams are out at Old Trafford and we're just a few minutes away from kick-off. It's a beautiful day in Manchester, but will the sun be shining on Giggs' men this afternoon?
HALF TIME at Old Trafford, and Sunderland go in ahead at the break after a well-made goal, while Ryan Giggs' men have looked rather clueless inside the Black Cats' half.
The work in the final third from United has been poor. Their crossing has not been up to standard and Giggs has his work cut out in the half-time team talk.
Can the hosts turn things around, or will Poyet's men maintain their discipline to hold on for another vital victory? Be sure to rejoin us when we get back underway for the second half.
Almost time to get back underway at Old Trafford. How will the next 45 minutes pan out? The visitors will give their survival hopes a massive boost if they can hold on to win here.
That's FULL TIME at Old Trafford and Sunderland have won! What a result! Sunderland have had a remarkable run and they've produced a wonderful display to hold United at bay. Seb Larsson's fine volley has given Gus Poyet's men the spoils here today.
Having looked dead certs for relegation, the Black Cats are now three points clear of the drop zone. The result also means Fulham and Cardiff are both down after they lost their games.
Well, what a result for Sunderland! Plenty to mull over for United, who were just not good enough in the final third. Giggs has his work cut out - will he be able to take the job permanently?
Well, that's all from our LIVE coverage of events at Old Trafford. Thanks for joining, and we hope to see you again soon!
