Lampard flights it in... and Courtois claims it unchallenged. disappointing for the visitors. Atleti counter but David Luiz and Ba combine to clear away the danger before the final whistle is blown!
90' +5
D. Ba gets yellow.
Ba earns a corner for Chelsea! One last chance to get a vital away goal...
90' +4
D. Ba enters the game and replaces Willian.
That is miles over the top from Costa! It has not been the Brazilian's night, tonight. From 25 yards it would have taken some effort to find the back of the net.
90' +3
WELL WIDE! Arda dribbles inside from the left before releasing a right-footed effort at goal. It drifts wide of the far post and is never testing Schwarzer.
90' +2
COSTA!! Gabi dinks a shallow ball into the box but although Costa gets his head to it he directs it straight at Schwarzer. With just three minutes left, can Chelsea hang on to their clean sheet? Los Rojiblancos are monopolising possession.
90' +1
We are into the first of an additional five, that's right, FIVE, minutes!
90'
DAVID LUIZ... misses the target! The Brazilian got plenty of power behind his shot but it did not start dipping until it was over the bar already. That may well be Chelsea's last chance to get an away goal.
89'
Miranda gets yellow.
FREE KICK TO CHELSEA 20 YARDS OUT! Torres does brilliantly to knock the ball past Miranda, but as he runs to get on the end of it he is felled by Miranda. The Brazilian is booked.
88'
GOOD DEFENDING FROM CAHILL! Yet again his positioning is perfect as he jumps alongisde Costa and blocks the striker's header inside the box.
87'
Schurrle does well to chase a long ball down the right and earn his side a throw in. Azpilicueta takes his time to get forward to take it but the visitors are unable to forge anything from it.
Minute
Description
86'
David Villa enters the game and replaces Raúl García.
85'
Raul Garcia is finding too much space in the box! Once more he gets his head to a delivery from the right, this time couresy of Sosa, but his looped effort drops onto the roof of the net.
84'
Chelsea are beginning to look like they are just clinging to this 0-0 scoreline as they continue to invite pressure from Atleti. In truth they've never looked like scoring tonight, and once more Torres lets go of the ball too early and brings a chance to break to an early end.
82'
AMBITIOUS! Gabi clips the ball into Diego Costa, with his back to goal, on the edge of the box. He controls it with his chest but his attempted overhead kick is poor and he slices his shot well wide of the target. Some goal it would have been had he pulled it off, mind.
80'
Juanfran is continually pingning crosses into the area and once again he picks out Raul Garcia. It fails to result in an effort on target once more, though, as the header fails to worry Schwarzer.
79'
J. Sosa enters the game and replaces Mario Suárez.
SO CLOSE! Juanfran does brilliantly to stand a cross up at the back post and Arda climbs above Cahill to meet it. He just needs to get it on target and the deadlock could be broken, but he sends the header wide of the target.
78'
Another delivery from Juanfran is the source of danger, but this time it is an early one. Raul Garcia peels off his marker to get his head to it at the back post but he fails to keep his attempt to steer the ball on target down, instead angling it over the top.
76'
GREAT SAVE!! Gabi drills the free kick from 20 yards low towards the bottom corner but Schwarzer shows great agility to get down and parry the effort behind for a corner. The wall really let the keeper down there, but didn't he do well to keep it out!
75'
M. Obi gets yellow.
Gabi gets yellow.
The Atleti players appeal that Lampard should be shown his second yellow card for handling the ball, but the referee does not oblige despite awarding the hosts a free kick. Things get a bit tasty in the aftermath, with Gabi and Mikel both picking up bookings that mean the pair will be suspended for the second leg.
74'
CHANCE FOR ATLETI! Filipe worms his way into the box from wide on the left and lays it off to Raul Garcia. He does not strike it first time, though, which enables the Chelsea defence to get into position to make an important block.
73'
A. Schürrle enters the game and replaces J. Terry.
72'
Schurrle is warming up on the touchline and it looks as though he may be the man to replace Terry. It would see Ramires moved into the centre of midfield in place of David Luiz who would thus slot in at centre-back.
70'
Terry seems to have picked up a knock from the resultant corner and is hobbling across the pitch. Will he be able to continue? Chelsea don't have any experienced defenders on the bench so would probably need David Luiz to move into a defensive role.
68'
Atleti are beginning to open up more space in the final third, with Chelsea being stretched by their play. Arda is fed down at the byeline but again Mikel is across to cover and block his attempted cross. The home crowd sense the tide turning and let out an almighty cry in support of their side.
66'
Great header from Mikel! He slots into the defence and gets an important head to Gabi's cross, which looked destined for Costa to direct into the net. Great defending from the Chelsea midfielder.
64'
F. Lampard gets yellow.
Lampard will miss the second leg! The experienced midfielder catches Arda in the centre of the park and receives a yellow card for the challenge. That means he will not be eligible to feature in the return leg.
63'
Gabi flights it into the box but Terry is once more the man to get his head on the ball before Ramires makes sure by hoofing it out of play.
62'
Juanfran attempts to bend a cross in from the right and it hits the arm of Lampard, so the referee awards Atleti a free kick in a threatening area on the far side.
60'
A. Turan enters the game and replaces Diego.
Diego! The Brazilian is not closed quickly enough 20 yards out and takes the chance to let a volley fly at Schwarzer's goal. He slices it a bit, though, and misses the target. It proves to be his last input as he is replaced by Arda Turan for the final 30 minutes.
59'
TORRES! That is better from the striker as once again he drifts out to the left and attempts to dribble into the box. He beats three players before cutting back onto his right foot, but rather than tee up a team mate he opts to shoot and sends his effort straight at Courtois!
57'
Chelsea win a corner on the near side but once again they are unable to test Courtois from it. Mourinho will be wanting more from his side in the final third, as they have been largely limp up to now. Torres' touch has been appalling so far and has brought a couple of attacks to a premature end already.
55'
DIEGO!! THAT WAS A GREAT CHANCE! Schwarzer comes off his line but connects with a cross from the right with an unconvincing punch. The ball drops to Diego on the edge of the box but in shifting the ball onto his right foot he offers Schwarzer a chance to get back in position to make a save, and the keeper obliges.
54'
Juanfran lifts a cross into the box from the right which looks set reach Filipe at the back post, but Ramires chases back to get in position to clear the danger.
53'
A nice move from Atleti as they inject some energy in the final third with Diego passing into Koke. He flicks the ball onto Gabi but his lofted pass over the defence is headed behind by Cole for a corner, which Schwarzer subsequently comes to claim.
52'
David Luiz makes his way back onto the pitch and is whistled by the home fans. He looks fine to continue and Mourinho will not be forced into his second change of the game.
51'
Diego puts a very physical challenge in on David Luiz as he contests a header and the Chelsea man has stayed down on the ground. As it is a head injury the Brazilian receives treatment on the pitch, but Simeone wants them to hurry up and get him off. It was a rather nasty collision with Diego to be fair to him.
49'
Raul Garcia goes down in the box and feels he should have a penalty but is instead penalised for a foul as he is sandwiched between two Chelsea defenders. The decision comes much to the dismay of the crowd.
48'
LAMPARD! A long throw into the box from Azpilicueta is headed away by Godin. He only gets it as far as Lampard, though, and the midfielder lashes a brilliant volley on target. However, he directs it too close to Courtois who is able to catch the ball at the first attempt.
46'
We are back underway in Madrid!
45' +5
It is taken short before Filipe's cross is caught by Schwarzer. The referee then signals for the end of the half.
45' +4
Torres chases back as Godin strides up from defence but concedes a foul in his attempts to win possession. One more chance for Atleti to get the ball in the box.
45' +3
David Luiz rifles it... straight into the wall! A categorical waste from the Brazil international as he smashes a powerful shot into the first line of defence.
45' +2
Free kick to Chelsea on the edge of the box as Godin blocks of Torres and concedes a foul. It is a great opportunity, but can the visitors make anything of this?
45' +1
DIEGO! The Brazilian receives the ball from Costa and drills a low shot towards Schwarzer's near post. He fails to generate enough power to really test the keeper, who collects cleanly, though.
45'
There will be four minutes of added time at the end of this half!
44'
Chelsea deal with the delivery but the pressure isn't cleared. Another cross is swung into the box and Cole, in a rather unorthodox manner, heads it behind for a corner.
43'
Willian is caught out of position and Atleti exploit it by picking out Diego in that area. The Chelsea man realises his error and races back but fouls his compatriot in the process. Another chance for the hosts to get the ball in the box.
41'
IMPORTANT BLOCK! A decent cross in from the right eventually falls to Costa at the back post. He controls with his chest before lashing a volley towards goal, but Azpilicueta closes quickly and makes a vital interception. The Atleti striker claims he used a hand, but it could not have been deliberate at such speed.
39'
Los Rojiblancos look to forge an opening from the right but Juanfran is unable to beat Willian for pace towards the byeline, and the Brazilian shepherds the ball out of play for a goal kick. He has put in a good shift for his team so far.
38'
Chelsea win a corner but Lampard's delivery is plucked out of the sky by a confident Courtois. There were numerous bodies in the box but the Belgian judged it well to come off his line and collect that.
37'
Azpilicueta misjudges a pass out to Koke on the left and completely misses the ball. The Spaniard brings it down but before he can even attempt to whip a cross in Cahill is there to block him off and half the attack. Good covering from the centre-back, there.
35'
SO CLOSE! Mario Suarez, in a central position 30 yards out from goal, is teed up and releases a wicked, bending shot. It looks to be heading for the bottom corner of Schwarzer's goal but it lacks sufficient curl to bring it back inside of the post, and the keeper withdraws his hand to let it drift wide.
33'
A lovely, raking pass from Luiz shows his speed of though as he quickly takes a free kick on the half-way line. His target is Torres, but the striker's touch lets him down on the edge of Courtois' box and he fails to keep the ball in play.
32'
STAT: Jose Mourinho is coaching in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the fifth season in a row. He is bidding to become the first coach to lead three different clubs to Champions League glory.
30'
OVER THE TOP! Another ball from the left by Atleti is met by Raul Garcia at the back post as he outjumps Ashley Cole, however, he cannot steer his effort on target. We've not seen much in the way of goal-mouth action with 30 minutes played now.
28'
WASTED! Willian sparks a Chelsea break with a great run through the centre of the park. He spots Ramires in a position which echoed his memorable goal against Barcelona in a previous Champions League semi-final, but he could not match the finish instead sending an aimless ball wide of the far post.
27'
Diego has been dropping back from the front to pick up the ball, but as of yet he has been unable to unlock the stern Chelsea defence. If the Brazilian moves out to one of the flanks his position is immediately taken up by another player so the hosts aren't left short in the middle. Here, he is beaten to the ball by David Luiz but despite going to ground no free kick is awarded.
25'
A good decision from the assistant referee as he flags for an offside as Raul Garcia looked to run in behind to meet Filipe's cross. There wasn't much in it but the Atleti man was certainly in an illegal position.
23'
Raul Garcia is so sharp tonight! Again he is on hand to pounce as Cheslea's control of the ball momentarily slips in the area. His challenge on David Luiz sees him prod the ball to Costa, but the striker was in an offside position.
22'
FACT: Atletico Madrid came out on top the last time these two sides met in August 2012. A hat-trick from Radamel Falcao helped Atleti clinch the Uefa Super Cup with a 4-1 victory.
20'
Torres drifts out to the left and looks to manoeuvre his way past Juanfran and wins his side a corner. It is swung into the box and Cahill nods it down in the six-yard box but the referee signals for a foul on Courtois in the build-up.
19'
Schwarzer's first action is to help his side defend a corner, but Atleti take it short and Filipe's cross evades all of his team-mates. You would have thought the hosts would have been keen to test the substitute keeper as quickly as they could from that.
18'
M. Schwarzer enters the game and replaces P. Čech.
17'
Bad news Chelsea fans - Cech is heading off following some treatment in the goal mouth. The 41-year-old goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer will take his place between the sticks. A big game for the Australian!
15'
CECH! It looks like the keeper's game may be coming to a premature end! The Czech Republic international did a good job of tipping Koke's corner behind from under his crossbar, but a collision with Raul Garcia sees him signal for a change following his landing. Schwarzer starts warming up.
14'
It is not quite a counterattacking approach from Chelsea. When they get the ball they want to hold onto it, despite the torrent of whistles cascading down from the stands. Should they continue to lack pace, though, they could find Atleti just as difficult to break down and the two teams could cancel each other out.
12'
When not in possession Mourinho's men are lining up with a flat midfield five across the middle, with Torres the only man not getting behind the ball. The hosts continue to search for an opening but Raul Garcia commits another as he closes down Lampard.
10'
Diego Costa gives Cahill something to think about as he attempts to bring the ball under control of the edge of the box and he applies enough pressure to send possession loose. Raul Garcia instantly pounces but goes in high on Cole as he looks to send the ball to safety, and a free kick is given against him.
9'
It's been a somewhat bitty start to the game, but there is no doubting that Simeone's men are in charge at the moment. The vast majority of the play has been in the Chelsea half, who will need to get plenty of numbers forward should they choose to play on the break.
7'
Chelsea are awarded a throw in close to the half-way line, much to the discontent of the home fans. Willian brings it down and passes back to the taker, Cole, who is quickly closed down and ends up conceding a throw to the opposition.
6'
Los Rojiblancos are continually probing, looking to find channels of space in this Chelsea side. After Diego was unable to play in Costa, Atleti reset with Mario Suarez attempting to spread the play out to the right with Juanfran bombing up from the back. He puts too much power behind his pass and ends up sending it out of play.
4'
Torres is pressing from the front and shows plenty of energy as he chases down Gabi on the half-way line. However, his challenge on the midfielder is late and the referee awards Atleti a free kick. How Torres would love to show the sort of form tonight that brought him into the global eye as an Atleti player.
3'
Juanfran and Raul Garcia look to combine on the near side but the latter is adjudged offside as he runs back from deep to get involved with the play. A positive early start from the hosts with Chelsea's midfield sitting rather deep at the moment.
2'
Diego gets the first shot of the game away as he finds space 25 yards from goal and shifts the ball onto his left foot. He lets fly but is unable to guide his effort on target, with the shot bouncing well wide of Cech's right-hand post.
1'
We are underway in Madrid! The hosts in their traditional kit shooting from left to right, while the visitors don their black alternate strip for this evening.
Filipe motors forward down the left and is picked out by a brilliant pass from Gabi in the centre. The left-back gets his head up and pings a cross to the back post where Costa is lurking, but the delivery is slightly overhit and rolls out for a throw in on the far side.
Hello and welcome for tonight's play-by-play analysis of the first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Atletico Madrid and Chelsea! The Vicente Calderon is our destination tonight as the experienced Jose Mourinho comes up against one of the brightest young coaches in European football, Diego Simeone. A place in the final of club football's greatest competition is at stake and I, Tom Webber, will be guiding you through all the action as it happens!
Atleti last reached the semi-final of the European Cup 40 years ago, back in 1974, so can be considered relatively inexperienced on this stage. In contrast, this is Chelsea's seventh appearance in the last four of the Champions League in 11 campaigns. They will hope such pedigree will hold them in good stead going into this tie, but los Rojiblancos, who currently sit four points clear at the top of La Liga, cannot be underestimated.
ATLETI TEAM NEWS: Thibaut Courtois has been granted permission to feature against his parent club and starts in goal, but Diego Simeone still makes three changes to the side which defeated Elche 2-0 on Friday. Adrian, Tiago and David Villa drop to the bench, with Raul Garcia, Mario Suarez and Diego awarded starting berths instead. Arda Turan is only fit enough to start among the substitutes after missing the previous game.
CHELSEA TEAM NEWS: Cech returns to the starting line-up after sitting out Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Sunderland with illness. Ramires is also available after missing the quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, but in a defensive move he starts on the right flank with John Obi Mikel, David Luiz and Frank Lampard forming the midfield trio. As Branislav Ivanovic is suspended, Cesar Azpilicueta begins at right-back with Ashley Cole filling in on the opposite side of defence. Fernando Torres is given the nod to start in attack against the club with which he started his career as Samuel Eto'o is sidelined with injury.
Atletico Madrid (4-4-2): Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe; Raul Garcia, Gabi, Suarez, Koke; Diego Costa, Diego Ribas.
Chelsea (4-3-3): Cech; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Mikel, David Luiz, Lampard; Ramires, Torres, Willian.
Chelsea bench: Schwarzer, Ake, Kalas, Oscar, Van Ginkel, Schurrle, Ba.
So, it is the two previous winners of the Europa League up against one another tonight, suggesting a growing competitiveness and prestige in Europe's secondary club competition. Tonight, though, is all about the Champions League and there will be no shortage of motivation for either of these two teams tonight.
Comparisons have been drawn between the two coaches, both of whom prefer their football to have more substance over style. Diego Simeone has made the Rojiblancos a difficult side to play against, and perhaps appreciating that Jose Mourinho has taken steps to put out a more robust side tonight. Atleti, though, are rather irrepressible on their own turf.
Diego Simeone's side hold a four-point lead at the top of the Liga standings with four games to go, and they have only suffered one defeat at the Vicente Calderon all season. That came courtesy of their city rivals, Real Madrid, in their Copa del Rey semi-final in February. How Jose Mourinho would enjoy similar result to that of his former club tonight!
Atleti are the last unbeaten team in the tournament having won eight and drawn two of their previous games in the competition. Furthermore, los Rojiblancos have won 17 of their previous 18 European home games, with the only blemish being a 2-0 defeat courtesy of Rubin Kazan in last season’s Europa League.
Chelsea have won just three of their 14 previous encounters away to Liga teams, but their last visit to the Vicente Calderon ended in a 2-2 draw in November 2009. However, the hosts have never been beaten in front of their own fans by English opponents.
The teams are out on the pitch and the goosebump-inducing Champions League anthem booms around the stadium. Expect a brilliant atmosphere, as usual, inside the Vicente Calderon tonight!
The pre-match formalities are all but over now! Kick off will be upon us in a matter of moments.
HALF TIME - Atletico Madrid 0-0 Chelsea: The hosts have had the better of possession but have been unable to find a way through Jose Mourinho's stoic Chelsea side. Opportunities to break the deadlock have been at a premium with no goalkeeper yet forced into a meaningful save. It has been a pragmatic first half, from both sides to some degree, but there is still plenty to come in the second half. Be sure to join me for it in 15 minutes.
Welcome back! The two teams are making there way back out onto the pitch. Mourinho will hope for more of the same this half, though the lack of quality in attack may worry him. Simeone will want his side to be more incisive after the break and make Chelsea pay for their defensive approach.
FULL TIME - Atletico Madrid 0-0 Chelsea: It ends goalless at the Vicente Calderon with Simeone's men unable to find a way through this stubborn Blues side. Mourinho set his team out to be difficult to break down and they were exactly that, though he may have been concerned by their glaring inadequacies in attack. The Madrid side are still in with a huge shout despite playing away from home in the return leg. A single goal for them would mean Chelsea would require a win!
It was a pragmatic, stop-start game, but still an entertaining one. It is all still to play for in the return leg next week, but for tonight that is all from me. My name is Tom Webber and it has been a pleasure to guide you through the action.
