Scottish Cup: Hibernian 4 Falkirk 3 (AET)

13 April 2013 17:13

Hibernian will contest the Scottish Cup final after overcoming a three-goal deficit to beat Falkirk 4-3 in extra-time on Saturday.

Pat Fenlon's side went in at half-time three goals behind but strikes from Alex Harris, Eoin Doyle and a double from Leigh Griffiths secured the club's second successive Scottish Cup final appearance, capping a memorable comeback.

Hibs found themselves a goal down within the first six minutes, as Lyle Taylor cut the ball back from the left hand side of the penalty area for Craig Sibbald to smash home for the opener.

Things got even worse for the SPL outfit eight minutes later, as they failed to deal with a long free kick into the box, which allowed Jay Fulton to send a diving header past the helpless Ben Williams.

On the half-hour mark it became embarrassing for Hibs as Blair Alston pounced on a rebound to tap the ball into an empty net for the First Division side's third goal of the game.

Hibs had a chance to reduce the deficit five minutes into the second half but they finally got their goal one minute later, with Harris unleashing an unstoppable 25-year-old shot.

With 20 minutes left Hibs were handed a golden chance to move within a goal of Falkirk after being awarded a penalty but Griffiths could only look on as Michael McGovern saved his spot kick and the resulting rebound.

They did finally reduce Falkirk's advantage with 13 minutes left to play in normal time, when Harris cut the ball back to Griffiths, who made no mistake from six-yards out.

The fightback was complete with eight minutes remaining as Doyle picked up possession in the middle of the Falkirk half, before equalising from the edge of the area, which sent the match to extra time.

Griffiths did have the ball in the net just before the end of the first period of extra time, but the assistant referee ruled the on-loan Wolves striker was offside.

With five minutes remaining and the game seemingly set for penalties, Griffiths unleashed a stinging drive from 30 yards that nestled in the back of the net, sealing Hibernian's spot in the final breaking the hearts of Falkirk.
