Toluca vs. Guadalajara  3 - 1

Liga MX Apertura wrap: Toluca progress in playoffs

19 November 2012 19:08

Toluca were hoping to keep their chances of a first Liga MX Apertura title since 2009 alive with victory over Guadalajara in their quarter-final second leg.

Heading into the match with a 2-1 advantage, the regular season leaders had to wait until the second half to move further ahead.

Sinha's quickly taken free kick caught the Guadalajara defence napping and Wilson Matias made no mistake with a simple tap in.

Toluca smelt blood and duly doubled the lead just two minutes later.

Again poor defending from the visitors left Luca Silva in acres of space to head home.

Juan Cacho then made the tie safe on 71 minutes.

Guadalajara grabbed a late consolation through Erick Torres but Toluca progress to the last four with a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Monterrey finished a lowly seventh in the regular Apertura season and needed to turn around a one goal deficit from their quarter-final first leg with Tijuana.

And the reigning CONCACAF champions were dealt a further blow when Pablo Aguilar broke the deadlock at the Estadio Caliente.

Monterrey grabbed a 93rd minute equaliser but they bow out 2-1 on aggregate.

Elsewhere, America's 2-0 first leg lead looked enough to ensure they reached the last four at the expense of Morelia.

However, just two minutes in the visitors were ahead when Joao Rojos capitalised on poor defending from Aquivaldo Mosquera.

But when Raul Jimenez gave the hosts a 3-1 aggregate lead later in the half, Mosquera's blushes looked to have been spared.

Miguel Sabah hit back to put the visitors ahead on the day but a scoreless second period means America qualify 3-2 on aggregate.

It won't get any easier for America as they face Toluca in the last four.

And Tijuana will battle it out with Leon who defeated Cruz Azul in the other quarter-final.
