Schalke have won their sixth game in a row in all competitions with a 3-0 triumph over second-tier side Sandhausen in the DFB Pokal.

Ibrahim Afellay, Ciprian Marica and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored the goals for Schalke on Tuesday as they advanced to the third round of Germany's premier knockout cup competition, continuing a fine fortnight.

Schalke defeated local rivals Borussia Dortmund on October 21 before winning away to Arsenal in the Champions League and then overcoming Nuremberg on Saturday to stay second in the Bundesliga.

Afellay scored the opener for Schalke in just the 11th minute, converting a left-wing cross from close range.

Sandhausen tried to hang on and thwarted the home side until the 62nd minute when Marica scored with a stunning bicycle kick, while Huntelaar wrapped up the win 11 minutes from the end with a smart finish inside the penalty area.

Dortmund joined Schalke in the DFB Pokal's third round with an impressive 4-1 win away to Aalen.

Mats Hummels got the visitors going with a cracking strike from a tight angle after 21 minutes before Marcel Schmelzer, Mario Goetze and Julian Schieber got in on the act.

Aalen's Michael Klauss hit the back of the net in the 87th minute to give the home fans something to cheer about.

Other top-tier clubs to progress were Mainz, who defeated Erzgebirge Aue 2-0, while Freiberg knocked off Eintracht Braunschwieg 2-0 and Augsburg overcame Preussen Muenster 1-0.

In other DFB Pokal results, 1860 Munich won 3-0 away to fourth-tier Berlin-based club BAK '07, Cologne triumphed on penalties against Wormatia Worms and Bochum defeated Havelse 3-1.
