Chelsea are unable to do much damage in the closing seconds, and Shakhtar hold firm for a deserved win.
90'
Three minutes of injury time at the Donbass Arena...
89'
The hosts will be unhappy about that. They fell asleep and allowed Ivanovic to weave down the right, there was an excellent dummy from Hazard, which left Oscar in acres of space to tap home.
88'
Douglas Costa enters the game and replaces Willian.
Oscar has scored a goal for Chelsea! Assist by B. Ivanović.
GOAL! Oscar gives Chelsea hope. He slots in on the six-yard line after good work from Ivanovic down the right and a good dummy from Hazard. They don't deserve it, but they might just get something from this...
86'
T. Hübschman gets yellow.
Ramires is rather clattered into there, and a justifiable booking is handed out.
83'
Willian has been brilliant tonight, as has his Brazilian team-mate Fernandinho. They have been a constant threat.
82'
Ilsinho enters the game and replaces Alex Teixeira.
81'
One of the key things Shakhtar have done so well tonight is mix it up. They have gone longer when necessary, but retained the ball when they can. Excellent tactical display, and good technique.
80'
David Luiz gets yellow.
Luiz can sometimes look like a lost boy and make silly fouls. That probably was a booking, but it was not malicious.
79'
Hazard has been poor tonight, but he nearly got Chelsea back into this game. However, he was unable to beat Pyatov, who came off his line well to save with his legs.
Minute
Description
78'
And they very nearly did just concede. Hubschman is denied after a weak shot in the area having been set-up by Luiz Adriano.
76'
15 minutes left in Donetsk - and it's not looking good for the European Champions. They look more likely to concede than score.
74'
Hazard links up well with Sturridge, but the former's effort is weak and easily saved by Pyatov.
71'
Now it's Mkhitaryan's chance to test Cech. he stings the Czech's hands with a powerful drive from a central position.
70'
D. Sturridge enters the game and replaces Fernando Torres.
Fernandinho has yet another wonderful effort. Neat interchange on the edge of the area allows him an effort from the right side of the box, but his shot is just wide.
First change for Chelsea, and the disappointing Torres is replaced by Sturridge.
68'
Chelsea win a corner down the right flank - but it's a poor delivery. They need to get back into this game quickly, and they need better than that from set pieces.
67'
O. Kucher gets yellow.
Kucher is booked, but it could have been worse. Torres won the ball back well, and played a ball through to Hazard who was closing in on goal. A necessary foul.
64'
Ashley Cole has been quiet but very effective tonight. He once again cuts out an excellent-looking pass from Fernandinho.
63'
As things stand, the hosts are set to go top of this qualifying group. Who would have thought that when the draw was made?
61'
Now seems like as good a time as any to give praise to Shakhtar's central-defensive pair Kucher and Rakitskiy. They've been superb.
60'
Juan Mata, who has been quiet so far, does well to beat a few players, but his cross is not quite good enough for Torres to get enough on.
58'
The game has settled into a similar pattern as the first half, with the home side deep without the ball, but keeping possession well. Chelsea lack any real penetration in attack.
56'
Ramires is playing like a crazy bull at the moment. He's rampaging around midfield.
53'
Hazard tries to redeem himself with a powerful shot from the edge of the area, but his effort is palmed wide by Pyatov.
That's a real hammer blow for Chelsea - who must have wanted to come out and keep things quiet before grabbing themselves an equaliser. An awful mistake from Hazard, who clumsily allowed himself to be caught on the ball in the centre circle, allowing Adriano to pounce and bound straight down the middle of the park, before passing to his team-mate who calmly slotted the ball past a helpless Cech.
52'
Fernandinho has scored a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk! Assist by Luiz Adriano.
GOAL! Shakhtar double their advantage. Terrible mistake by Hazard, who sloppily concedes possession at the foot of the centre circle, and Luiz Adriano drives forward before squaring the ball to Fernandinho who gets a deserved second for the Ukrainians.
50'
Ashley Cole rather 'runs-through' Fernandinho rather than tackles him. It's a poor challenge for someone on a yellow card.
49'
Without wishing to sound harsh, Torres has made a dreadful start to this half.
48'
Ramires goes on a mazy 'Maradona-esque' run through midfield, but is stopped by centre-back Rakitskiy.
46'
Chelsea kick-off and the second period is underway.
It's a bright start for the visitors, who patiently build-up play from the back, and the move ends with a Torres shot being deflected by a crowd of bodies.
45' +1
No. Because they retain the ball excellently for the final minute of the half, and round off a brilliant opening period.
45'
A minute of stoppage time, can the Ukrainians get the second goal they deserve?
44'
Panic! Another Shakhtar corner - but this one floats over Cech's head to safety.
43'
There's a half chance for Torres. He hooks a ball towards goal from a Hazard cross, but it's weak and never going to beat Pyatov.
42'
Shakhtar are defending well in numbers, and are sitting very deep waiting to catch Chelsea on the break. Torres is not helping the visitors' cause with several poor touches in vital areas.
41'
Yet another opening, it could be four or five here! Fernandinho finds space in the middle of midfield, advances, and then shoots - all without much attention from a defender.
40'
So close again. Another corner is swung into the area and causes panic with Cech eventually slapping the ball clear after a shot from Kucher.
39'
The resulting corner flashes across the area. Even the faintest of touches could have resulted in a goal there.
38'
Great chance there as Cech denies Mkhitaryan. Ashley Cole tried to unsettle the forward, and perhaps he did, because his shot was weak.
36'
Branislav Ivanovic goes on a little saunter into the area, but is dispossessed by a bunch of Orange-shirted defenders. The hosts are dropping deeper and deeper as the game wears on.
33'
At times it seems like John Terry holds this defence together single-handedly, he denies Luiz Adriano with a vital block.
32'
Brazilian Oscar has also been a little quiet - well by his standard against Juventus anyway - but he did well there with a run and cross down the right.
30'
Hazard has looked a little wasteful since coming on this evening, that said, Srna has given him a lot to do defensively so far.
27'
Fernandinho and Hubschman are running things for the hosts tonight. They're providing a great base for Willian to work off.
Now Mkhitaryan goes close. He's allowed to turn on the edge of the area by Luiz, but his shot is weak.
26'
Now captain Darijo Srna goes close with a left-foot shot from the right corner of the area.
25'
Its end-to-end stuff here, Shakhtar break well but Willian's square ball from the edge of the area is intercepted by Terry.
24'
Chelsea go close, but it's that man Torres who can't do the business. Hazard does well down the left, but the Spaniard can't beat Pyatov who smothers him well.
22'
A. Cole gets yellow.
A little harsh that booking for Cole, a foul yes, but the opposition player really made the most of it.
Chelsea looking a little more composed now. Ivanovic swings in a cross from the right, but goalkeeper Pyatov comes out to gather above Torres.
20'
20 minutes gone, and it looks like only one winner here. Chelsea need to get themselves sorted quickly, or Shakhtar will take advantage...
18'
E. Hazard enters the game and replaces F. Lampard.
Willian again goes close, this time after a poor clearance from John Terry. The Blues' must get tighter to him.
Frank Lampard isn't going to get over that knock. On his 100th European appearance for Chelsea, he's being replaced by £32million man Eden Hazard.
16'
Frank Lampard is in a spot of bother with an injury.
15'
Willian shows Chelsea what they could be missing, his impressive shot is just over Cech's crossbar.
14'
Chelsea are looking comfortable on the ball, but so are the hosts, who look very dangerous
10'
Not Torres' finest opening 10 minutes - he's just slipped over and then given away a foul. The Blues need a big performance from him tonight...
9'
Chelsea had a great opening there, but Fernando Torres went alone when he should have found Mata. He was in acres of space in the middle, but his fellow Spaniard ran into trouble
8'
The Ukrainian's are good on the ball, and are retaining the ball well, albeit without really hurting their visitors
6'
Oscar has Chelsea's first effort on target this evening, but his effort from distance is easily saved
5'
The visitors look to bounce back, and win a corner, but it comes to nothing
4'
They may have been distracted by a handball claim, but they didn't play to the whistle, and are now really up against it
3'
Alex Teixeira has scored a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk!
Shakhtar now having more of the ball, and have won a throw-in high up the pitch
GOAL! Shakhtar have opened the scoring!
It's a little fortunate for the hosts, but they won't care. Alex Teixeira - who scored their goal in Turin - has done it again. It was sloppy defending by Chelsea on the edge of their area, and the ball fell to the Brazilian who slotted past Petr Cech
1'
We're underway, and it's Chelsea who have had most of the ball in the early stages...
I'm Rhys Turrell, and I'll be taking you through this evening's match at the Donbass Arena
That's an unchanged line-up from their last group match when they claimed a good point in Turin against Juventus. The side does show five changes from their last match however, which was in the league on Friday night
Chelsea make two changes from their 4-2 win against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday lunchtime. Captain John Terry returns as his ban does not extend to European games, whilst fellow Englishman Frank Lampard also is recalled - he surprisingly replaces Eden Hazard
Their full line-up is as follows: Cech; Ivanovic, D Luiz, Terry (c), Cole; Mikel, Lampard; Ramires, Oscar, Mata; Torres
Shakhtar attacker Willian has been identified by those who know these things as the 'danger man' for the hosts tonight. He claimed earlier this week that he was close to a move to either Chelsea or Spurs over the summer, so he will be keen to impress
For the visitors, it's hard to look beyond Juan Mata as the biggest threat after his super display at the Lane on Saturday but of course this Chelsea side have top attacking talent all over the pitch.
Good evening everyone and welcome to Goal.com's coverage of Chelsea's meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League
The teams are in, and this is how the hosts line-up tonight:
Pyatov, Srna, Kucher, Rakitskiy, Rat, Hubschman, Fernandinho, Alex Teixeira, Mkhitaryan, Willian, Luiz Adriano.
We're 10 minutes away from kick off in Ukraine...
Frank Lampard becomes the first Chelsea player to make 100 appearances in European football this evening, he will have an important role shielding the back four alongside Mikel
The teams are out on the field, the 'anthem' is blaring and we're now just a few minutes away from kick-off...
Shakhtar will kick-off tonight's game...
The hosts meanwhile will be delighted with how their opening half has gone - they have been highly impressive with Fernandinho, Willian and Srna all looking top drawer tonight.
Donetsk will be keen to extend their lead, and as it stands it doesn't look like long until they will. However, Chelsea have shown great resilience in this competition very recently, and you wouldn't bet against them bouncing back in the second half.
Well, Roberto Di Matteo will be delighted to get into the changing rooms with just a one goal deficit I would suspect. His side have been poor. They have looked open since Frank Lampard left the field with an injury, and have not been anywhere near clinical enough in attack - with Torres particularly disappointing.
Well. The group has been thrown wide open by this result, and a thoroughly deserved win it was for the hosts who played with verve, energy and tactical discipline to inflict a first defeat on Chelsea since their Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea will be disappointed by their showing, but will know a win at Stamford Bridge over the Ukrainians will reignite their bid to advance to the knockout stages. Hazard's mistake for the second goal was costly, but he improved after. It would be unfair to blame him for the whole defeat - they lost to a very accomplished side.
It looks like Willian may not have been joking when he said Chelsea were interested in his signature. If they chose between him and Victor Moses then they made the wrong choice. The Brazilian was excellent throughout, however the real star of the show was Fernandinho. He ruled the centre of midfield throughout and got himself a goal to go with it.
A big shout is also needed for Petr Cech who was excellent in the Blues' goal. He was exposed several times by those in front of him - but responded well to the waves of pressure heading his way. Srna was also excellent for Shakhtar, he put in a real captain's performance to ensure his side took the three points.
That's all from me tonight, stay with Goal.com for all the fallout of tonight's games across Europe, and a look ahead to tomorrow's clashes.
