I just watched the goal again (and again). You can tell that Panucci collided with Buffon and was sent outside the field. He did not "step out" and of course could not ask for the referee's permission under those circumstances. The rule was created to protect the game from cheap defending tactics (voluntarily getting out of the pitch and creating a false "offside"). The goal was credited based on a wrong judgement from the ref. Period.

Likewise. It's so easy to be gracefull when you are on the top. A lot of people could learn from him.
