Germany-Poland Preview: Young stars get chance to shine

12 May 2014 00:11

Germany's fringe players will have the chance to push their World Cup case as a host of stars miss Tuesday's friendly versus Poland.

Coach Joachim Low revealed his preliminary 30-man squad for Brazil on Friday as well as the party he will choose from against Adam Nawałka's side.

The starting XI that will face Poland in Hamburg is set to differ vastly from that which Low is likely to choose at the World Cup, however, with virtually all of Germany's star names unavailable.

Indeed, Low is without his contingent from Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, who will contest the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday.

Arsenal's trio of Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski are missing due to the upcoming FA Cup final, while Andre Schurrle and Miroslav Klose are also absent.

That is good news for the likes of uncapped Kevin Volland, Leon Goretzka and Max Meyer. The trio have been included in both squads and will be desperate to make an impression.

At the announcement of the two squads, manager Low extolled the virtues of adding some young blood to a Germany side that has grown together since their memorable showing at the last World Cup.

That tournament saw the emergence of Ozil, Sami Khedira and Thomas Muller among others, and Low is hoping to find the perfect blend in Brazil.

"We need young dynamic players like those who perhaps only recently played themselves into contention," he added. "They can inject fresh impetus into the side."

As well as those players, a number of bigger names on the fringes of the starting XI - such as Lars Bender and Julian Draxler - are also aiming to grasp the opportunity.

For Poland, the game offers another opportunity to finally end a long-running hoodoo against their European neighbours.

In 17 matches between the sides, Germany have emerged victorious on 12 occasions with five encounters ending as draws.
