Hiddink agrees Netherlands return

28 March 2014 10:43

Guus Hiddink will return as Netherlands coach after the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this year.

The 67-year-old, who managed the nation between 1995 and 1998, will work alongside assistants Danny Blind and Ruud van Nistelrooy after the showpiece tournament in Brazil.

Hiddink will preside over the Netherlands' UEFA European Championship 2016 qualifying campaign and the competition itself should they reach it before Blind takes over in the build-up to the 2018 World Cup.

"I am honoured to return as coach for the Dutch team," Hiddink said in a statement on the KNVB website.

"With Danny Blind and Ruud van Nistelrooy, we also have a solid team with a lot of football knowledge and experience.

"Personally it is wonderful that I can prepare my own succession. This way the football vision for the Dutch team in the long term can be guaranteed."

Hiddink took the Netherlands to the 1996 Euro Championship, reaching the quarter-finals, and the World Cup two years later, where he secured a fourth-place finish.

In charge for the Euro 2016 qualifiers, Hiddink will face former employers Turkey as well as the Czech Republic, Latvia, Iceland and Kazakhstan.
