Anelka terminates West Brom contract

14 March 2014 18:44

Nicolas Anelka has announced that he has terminated his West Brom contract after the club sought to impose conditions he could not accept.

The Frenchman, who received a five-match ban for performing a controversial 'quenelle' gesture to celebrate a goal at West Ham in December, confirmed the news on his Twitter account.

"Following discussions between the club and me, proposals have been made to me that I rejoined the group under certain conditions I cannot accept," he wrote. "Wishing to keep my integrity ... I decided to free myself and to terminate the contract binding me with West Bromwich Albion until 2014, and now."

Anelka was suspended indefinitely by his club after an independent regulatory commission imposed what the Football Association considered to be a lenient ban.

That cast doubt over whether the 35-year-old would play for West Brom again and on Friday he brought that speculation to an end.

Anelka had denied the initial FA charge and defended the gesture, which has anti-Semitic connotations, by saying that it was anti-establishment and a dedication to his friend and comedian Dieudonne M'bala M'bala.

The ruling of the independent panel stated that it was "not satisfied" Anelka "was or is an anti-Semite" or that he "intended to express or promote anti-Semitism".

But he was widely criticised and has now paid the price for his actions, which were condemned by several organisations with links to the Jewish community.

His decision brings to an end a short and fruitless spell at The Hawthorns, with the striker having moved there in July and scored just twice - both in the 3-3 draw at Upton Park - in 12 appearances.

West Brom, now under the guidance of Pepe Mel, are 17th in the Premier League.
