Hoeness receives three-and-a-half-year sentence

13 March 2014 14:15

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been sentenced to three and a half years in jail for tax evasion by a German court.

Hoeness was initially charged with defrauding the authorities of €3.5million, but his trial in Munich revealed that the actual figure was €27.2m.

The 62-year-old voluntarily disclosed details of his tax evasion last year prior to proceedings getting under way, a gesture his defence hoped would mitigate any punishment.

However, after three days of hearings, it emerged on Thursday that Hoeness has been sentenced to 42 months behind bars for seven counts of tax evasion.

Hoeness admitted the charge, with the judge opting for a more lenient sentence than the five-and-a-half-year term put forward by the prosecution.

Hoeness' future as Bayern president remains unclear.
