FA to investigate Pardew headbutt

1 March 2014 19:16

The Football Association will look into Alan Pardew's actions after the Newcastle United manager appeared to headbutt David Meyler.

Newcastle cruised to a 4-1 win over Hull City on Saturday, Moussa Sissoko scoring twice while Loic Remy and Vurnon Anita also found the net in a fine victory for the visitors.

But it was Pardew stole the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the 72nd minute when Meyler ran over to the sideline to take a throw-in.

Meyler shoved Pardew while retrieving the ball and the incident quickly boiled over with the visiting boss appearing to move his head forward and strike the former Sunderland man, who was booked for his part in the incident.

The 52-year-old's actions overshadowed an excellent performance from Newcastle, although the former West Ham boss has since apologised for his loss of composure.

Despite expressing his regret, Pardew looks set to face action from the FA after a spokesperson confirmed to Perform that the governing body will be examining the matter.

Pardew has been involved in a number of other touchline confrontations during his career, receiving a two-match ban at the beginning of last season after pushing an official during a 2-1 opening day win over Tottenham.

The ex-Southampton manager was also involved in a fracas with Manuel Pellegrini during Newcastle's 2-0 home loss to Manchester City in January.

On that occasion Pardew escaped punishment from the FA, but was "reminded of his responsibilities" by the governing body after that spat.

However, Pardew appears unlikely to escape a sanction this time around, and admitted after the game that he may have to "sit down" from now on given his record of past indiscretions.
