Former Brazil striker Fernandao dies at 36

Former Internacional and Brazil striker Fernandao has died at the age of 36.

Fernandao - who captained Inter to the Copa Libertadores and FIFA Club World Cup in 2006 - passed away after a helicopter crash.

Having begun his career with Goias, Fernandao moved to Europe in 2001, playing for three years at Marseille and also spending time on loan at Toulouse while in France.

A move back to Brazil, with Inter, in 2004 revitalised the striker's career as he led the Porto Alegre club through their most successful period.

Inter reached the Copa Libertadores in 2006, eventually taking their first continental title thanks to 4-3 aggregate win over Sao Paulo - Fernandao scoring a crucial second-leg goal.

That triumph secured qualification for the Club World Cup, where Fernandao again captain the side to victory.

Adriano Gabiru - who had entered the game as a late substitute for Fernandao - grabbed the only goal as Inter overcame a star-studded Barcelona side in Yokohama.

He also scored the 1,000th goal in the history of Inter's fierce rivalry with Gremio, further sealing his place in club history.

After four years at Inter, Fernandao left to play for Al Gharafa in Qatar before returning to first club Goias and ending his career with a short stint at Sao Paulo.

Internacional hailed Fernandao as one of the club's 'greatest idols', having lifted 'the most important cup in the history of Inter'.

Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff added her tributes via Twitter.

She wrote: "A club world champion on the pitch, Fernandao was an example of character off the pitch."
