Villa signs for New York City

2 June 2014 16:00

David Villa has signed for new MLS franchise New York City, making him their first player.

New York - owned by Premier League champions Manchester City - will join the league from next season after being announced as the MLS' 20th franchise in May last year.

And they have chosen to make Spain's record goalscorer Villa their maiden acquisition following his successful season with Atletico Madrid in 2013-14.

Villa made 36 league appearances for Atleti last season, scoring 13 goals as Diego Simeone's men secured a first La Liga title since 1996.

The 32-year-old also helped Atleti to the UEFA Champions League final, but could not prevent them from succumbing to a 4-1 defeat to city rivals Real Madrid.

Former Barcelona forward Villa thanked Atleti for a great experience on Sunday, and is now relishing the challenge of helping New York City establish themselves as a force in the MLS.

He told New York's official website: "Throughout my career I've always tried to keep pushing myself to achieve new targets and this represents another important goal for me.

"I want to try and help MLS continue to grow, through playing, working hard, scoring goals and at the same time try to make New York City FC become the best team in the league.

"It's a real honour that the people who have formed the club have focused their attention on me.

"I'm keen to do the best I can, take on board that extra responsibility and prove my worth by repaying the confidence they have shown in me."

Villa is currently in the United States with Spain as they prepare to defend their World Cup crown from 2010.

The 32-year-old scored five goals en route to the final in South Africa and is expected to contribute once again in Brazil.

He is widely tipped to be joined in New York by Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard, whose contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of the month.
