Sunderland snap up Scocco

30 January 2014 14:00

Sunderland have secured the signing of Argentina attacker Ignacio Scocco from Brazilian club Internacional.

The 28-year-old has penned a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Stadium of Light and arrives for an undisclosed fee.

A well-travelled forward, Scocco has only made one appearance for Argentina but marked the occasion with two goals against Brazil in November 2012.

He began his career with Newell's Old Boys in his homeland and went on to enjoy spells at Pumas UNAM in Mexico, Greek outfit AEK Athens and Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates before rejoining Newell's and then moving on to Internacional last June.

Scocco becomes Sunderland's fourth signing of the January transfer window as Gus Poyet seeks to lead his team, who climbed out of the relegation zone on Wednesday with victory over Stoke City, to Premier League survival.

Sunderland have also brought in loanees Marcos Alonso and Santiago Vergini this month, as well as goalkeeper Oscar Ustari.

The club are also reported to have agreed a fee with Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion, Poyet's former club, for midfielder Liam Bridcutt.
