Ferguson named UEFA coaching ambassador

24 January 2014 12:52

Alex Ferguson has been named UEFA's new coaching ambassador at the governing body's first Executive Committee meeting of 2014.

Ferguson announced his retirement from management in May 2013 following a 27-year-stint with Manchester United, in which he led the Old Trafford club to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cup wins and two UEFA Champions League successes.

The Scot has remained with United as both a director and a club ambassador, and has been present at many matches this season as the defending Premier League champions have struggled to adapt to life under new boss David Moyes.

However, the 72-year-old has agreed to shift some of his focus away from his former club, and will now attend meetings with other elite coaches after accepting the position with the governing body of European football.

"Sir Alex will be chairman of the forum of elite coaches that meet every year," UEFA president Michel Platini said on Friday.

"He will also be a member of the technical study group of the (UEFA) Champions League and the (UEFA) European Championship."

Ferguson was quick to express his delight at being appointed to the position.

"It is an honour and a privilege to accept this role as ambassador for UEFA," he commented.

"With the experience I've had over the years, I hope to continue to help young coaches in particular, in an industry which is becoming more difficult.

"I look forward to the challenge, I look forward to contributing in a big way for UEFA, and I thank Michel Platini for giving me this opportunity."
