Capello signs Russia extension

24 January 2014 10:27

Fabio Capello has extended his contract as Russia coach until after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Capello, 67, took over from Dick Advocaat in July 2012 and successfully guided Russia to qualification for the 2014 World Cup, losing just two games as the nation topped UEFA's Group F ahead of Portugal.

And the Italian has been rewarded for his success with an extension until the end of the 2018 tournament, which Russia will host.

"I am grateful to the president of the RFU (Russian Football Union) and to the Russian minister of sport (Vitaly Mutko) for their confidence in me," Capello said in a statement on the RFU's official website.

"I am very pleased to continue working with Russia. We have big plans and I will do everything I can to ensure the Russian fans are happy."

The former England boss' previous contract had been due to expire this year, with speculation suggesting that Capello could be set to return to club management after the World Cup in Brazil.

Capello has enjoyed much success in European football over his managerial career, winning an array of major honours with the likes of Milan, Real Madrid and Roma.

But, Capello has now reaffirmed his commitment to the international game and Russia, despite links with a switch to Tottenham prior to the appointment of Tim Sherwood.

RFU president Nikolai Tolstoy added: "We are pleased that such a highly qualified coach, Fabio Capello, will continue to work in Russian football."
