League One Wrap: Leyton Orient, Brentford and Wolves all win

11 January 2014 22:36

The top three sides in League One all won on Saturday to keep the title race in the balance.

Brentford remain at the summit thanks to a routine 2-0 win at home to play-off hopefuls Port Vale.

Fulham loanee Marcello Trotta gave the hosts the lead after 30 minutes and although they had the better chances, they had to wait until two minutes from time before they could relax as Will Grigg doubled their lead.

Second-placed Leyton Orient picked up the win of the day, as they thumped Carlisle United 4-0 at the Matchroom Stadium.

Scott Cuthbert converted in the first half, before Jamie Ness, Kevin Lisbie and Shaquile Coulthirst – who recently arrived on loan from Tottenham – all netted in the second period to secure a comfortable victory.

Kenny Jackett’s Wolves remain the side best placed to challenge the leading pair and they stay two points behind Orient after recording a 2-0 triumph over Preston North End.

David Edwards set the hosts on their way in the 28th minute and Lee Evans doubled their lead early in the second half.

Rotherham kept up their play-off chase as they twice came from behind to beat visiting Crewe Alexandra 4-2, while Peterborough United slumped to a fourth successive league defeat as Swindon Town beat them 2-1, although Darren Ferguson’s men keep a hold of sixth.

Walsall took the lead at Tranmere Rovers through Chelsea-owned Milan Lalkovic but were hauled back to draw 1-1 while MK Dons' 3-2 victory at home to Shrewsbury Town saw them gain two points on Dean Smith's seventh-placed side.

Rock-bottom Stevenage were unable to add to their points tally as they lost 1-0 at Oldham Athletic, while Bristol City drew 1-1 at Bradford City.

A 2-1 win at home to Sheffield United saw Notts County move to within one point of safety, while goals from Sanchez Watt, Clinton Morrison and Freddie Sears gave Colchester United a comfortable 3-0 win over Gillingham.
