Copa del Rey Wrap: Real take first-leg advantage, Sociedad held by Villarreal

9 January 2014 23:50

Real Madrid are on course to reach the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey after securing a 2-0 first-leg win over Osasuna on Thursday.

Karim Benzema scored his 12th goal of the season after 19 minutes and forward Jese Rodriguez further enhanced his burgeoning reputation with Real's second on the hour-mark as the Bernabeu hosts took charge of the tie.

France striker Benzema got up well to head home Luka Modric’s inviting free-kick and put Real in front.

The former Lyon man was also involved in the second goal as he capitalised on a defensive error to play in Cristiano Ronaldo, who laid the ball off to Jese and watched the 20-year-old produce a clinical right-foot finish.

Real have now kept seven clean sheets in their last 11 competitive games, and Osasuna will have to spring a major shock in the second leg if they are to progress.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men travel to Osasuna next Wednesday and will be confident of progressing to the last four.

In the other two last-16 first-leg ties to be played on Thursday night, Real Sociedad were held to a goalless draw by Villarreal and there were also no goals in the clash between Rayo Vallecano and Levante.

Sociedad and Villarreal meet again in the league on Monday prior to their second leg, with the former now unbeaten in five matches.
