Manchester United draw like a win - Meulensteen

9 February 2014 19:55

A delighted Rene Meulensteen said Darren Bent's late equaliser in Fulham's 2-2 draw at Manchester United on Sunday "felt like a winner".

Meulensteen, a former coach at Old Trafford, set his side out to sit back and soak up United pressure.

And it looked like a master plan with 15 minutes left as Steve Sidwell's early goal had bottom-placed Fulham in the lead.

Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick netted within 80 seconds of each other as last season's champions surged ahead but Bent headed a 94th-minute leveller to ensure a share of the spoils.

Meulensteen – who saw his side have just 25 per cent possession and allow 31 goals on goal – told Sky Sports: "We made it very difficult for them.

"United's got some problems of their own to find rhythm. They kept creating chances but I think we defended fantastically well.

"We thought it was going to slip away with the quality they have to score the goals, which gave them a lift, but for Darren Bent to score that equaliser at the end, it felt like a winner."

Meulensteen also felt that for all of United's dominance, they rarely carved out clear-cut chances as his side claimed a result that will boost their bid for Premier League survival.

"If you look at the real, real quality of chances they have created - Maarten (Stekelenburg) had (only) one fantastic save to make and the second goal had a deflection," he added.

"The most important thing is that we got a point.

"A lot of people start to classify us as dead and buried. We have got far too much talent and team spirit to be where we are (in the table)."

Goalscorer Bent felt his side were well worth their point, citing their impressive work-rate as a major positive.

"The team worked so hard, especially in the first half," Bent said.

"When you go 2-1 down at these places, you think the worst, but I managed to put it away.

"Our performance in the first half – we were unlucky to take all three. We didn't let our heads drop and managed to get the point."
