Poyet refuses to dwell on defeat

8 February 2014 20:15

Gus Poyet was left to rue Wes Brown's early red card after Sunderland's defeat against Hull City - but will not dwell on Saturday's setback.

The Wearsiders were riding on the crest of a wave ahead of their clash against their former manager Steve Bruce's side after their 3-0 win at Newcastle United last week, but came crashing back down to earth.

Defender Brown was sent off for the third time this season after only three minutes for a professional foul on Shane Long at the Stadium of Light.

Hull made the most of their numerical advantage to secure a 2-0 win courtesy of a header in each half from Long and Nikica Jelavic.

It was Sunderland's first defeat in five Premier League matches, but Poyet is confident they can put the disappointment behind them.

"It's difficult to analyse, everything was set up to have a good game of football and then after three minutes it became really difficult," the Uruguayan said.

"Normally in these games, at the bottom, it is very tight and there is not a lot between the teams even if you have a better day and you are the better team on the pitch, sometimes a deflected shot will win it for you.

"Playing 85 minutes with one less it's even more difficult. I'm not going to kill myself analysing the game because it's not worth it.

"We can erase this and keep believing. We were good before 3 o'clock today, getting better and a difficult team to play against.

"We need to make sure this doesn't affect anything we were doing before."
