CAF Champions League Wrap: Kaizer Chiefs, Kampala City record first-leg wins

8 February 2014 22:11

South African champions Kaizer Chiefs made a good start to their CAF Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win over Black Africa on Saturday.

The 2013 Premier League champions, playing in the Champions League for the first time, had no problems against their Namibian opponents as they secured a first-leg victory in the preliminary round.

Two goals from Kingston Nkhatha and one from Mandla Masango sealed the win, with Kaizer Chiefs now firm favourites to progress when they travel to Windhoek for the second leg.

There was a surprise in Khartoum as Uganda's Kampala City beat Al Merreikh 2-0. Herman Wasswa opened the scoring in the 24th minute before Tony Odur wrapped up the win five minutes later.

Young Africa produced the result of the day with a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Komorozine, the Tanzanian side all but booking their place in the next round ahead of their trip to the Comoros Islands for the second leg.

Four sides hold slight advantages after their first legs. Kenya's Gor Mahia, Mozambique's Liga Muculmana, Burundi's Flambeau de l'Est and Diambars from Senegal all recorded 1-0 wins on Saturday, but only Flambeau will have home advantage in the second legs.

Sao Tome and Principe's Sporting Praia Cruz produced an impressive second half display to beat Stade Malien Bamako 3-2 having been level at 1-1 at half-time.

There were also wins for Angola's Kabuscorp, who beat Cote d'Or of the Seychelles 5-1, and Primeiro de Agosto who beat Lesotho's Lioli 2-0 in Luanda.

The only tie to not see a goal was FAR Rabat's clash with Real Bamako, while Sewe Sports and ES Setif were both handed places in the next round after their opponents withdrew.
