Rodgers: Liverpool play better against the big sides

6 February 2014 16:41

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has warned table-toppers Arsenal his side play better against the bigger sides at Anfield.

The Merseyside outfit welcome Arsene Wenger's side on Saturday, looking to avenge a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in November.

Liverpool have dropped points at Anfield on just two occasions this season, beating the likes of Manchester United and Everton on home soil.

Victory over Arsenal would reaffirm Liverpool's hopes of holding onto fourth spot and subsequent UEFA Champions League qualification.

Rodgers says he respects what Arsenal have achieved this season, but is confident his charges will once more raise their game in front of home support.

"Arsenal are leading the pack and we're amongst the clubs chasing," he said. "The players and supporters have been outstanding, this is a big game.

"Sometimes I feel, the bigger the game, the better we've played. At the Emirates though, Arsenal were the better team.

"Every game is critical now before the end of the season. Every team will look to take points off their rivals.

"If we win this weekend, we close the gap on the teams above us. So we need to make sure the performance is right.

"These types of games are an opportunity to make a statement of the progress we've made.

"When I came in, there wasn't much confidence to consistently win. Now there is and none more so than at Anfield.

"We'll respect our opponents, and none more so than Arsenal, but we'll expect to win and have the confidence to do so."

Rodgers confirmed he is hopeful of having defensive duo Glen Johnson (ankle) and Daniel Agger (calf) back in training next week, but centre-back Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) is still not ready to return.
