Clough hails ´remarkable´ United display

5 February 2014 00:17

Nigel Clough praised the "remarkable effort" from his players as Sheffield United knocked Fulham out of the FA Cup.

Clough's side booked a date in the fifth round at home to either Preston North End or Nottingham Forest thanks to substitute Shaun Miller's header in the final minute of extra-time in Tuesday's replay at Craven Cottage.

It made Fulham head coach Rene Meulensteen's decision to make eight changes look like a huge error as the League One strugglers more than held their own for 120 minutes.

And Clough felt his side got what they deserved.

He told ITV Sport: "If you hang on in there at 0-0 you've always got that opportunity. It's a remarkable effort by the players. You hear our 3,000 supporters out there absolutely loving it.

"I thought we did enough during the game to get one (goal), with a little bit more composure in and around the goal area. But we didn't think it was going to come that late.

"To score 30 seconds before the end, it's special."

The result and performance made a mockery of their lowly position in League One of 23rd and United are also yet to win a league game in 2014.

FA Cup wins over Fulham and Aston Villa, though, have put the Yorkshire club back in the spotlight for the right reasons.

Clough was especially pleased about the resolve showed by his group of players after slumping to a 3-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

"You sense this about the group. We had a bad off day on Saturday against Crewe," Clough said.

"We think it was just one of those days, put it behind us and produce another performance. A very honest bunch of lads."
