Redeveloped Camp Nou will be ´best in the world´

3 February 2014 17:59

Barcelona vice-president Javier Faus expects the redeveloped Camp Nou to be the "best sports complex in the world".

The Catalan club announced further details of the plan to update their stadium on Monday, and Faus revealed Barca will be spending €600million to produce the planet's leading sporting facility.

Barcelona have played their home games at the stadium since 1957, but there are problems with visibility in some areas of the stands and only a small section of the seating is covered.

The new Camp Nou is set to seat 105,000 spectators, all covered by a roof, in what the club are labelling more than just a "facelift".

Any final decisions will be put before a referendum of the club's members in early April, with a four-year construction project pencilled in to begin in 2017.

"It is going to be the most important project of this nature in any part of this nation or the world," Faus said on Monday. "No other stadium has a project to compare with what we're doing.

"Even London, Paris, New York, Milan, Rome, Madrid…no city has got anything to compare with what we've planning to design.

"In the centre of a city there is nothing to compare with this - yes, there are some great stadiums but no city can claim to have anything we've got in the heart of the city centre."

The proposed complex would also include an update to Barca's renowned La Masia academy, and the club's basketball team would also move to ensure all sports were based in one complex.

Faus was quick to point out that funding for the project will not interfere with the football team's activities, and any money spent would not come out of coach Gerardo Martino's transfer budget.

Former president Sandro Rosell first proposed the project before resigning last week due to investigations surrounding last year's transfer of Neymar from Santos.
