FIFA to discuss introduction of sin bins

3 February 2014 19:49

FIFA will discuss the introduction of sin bins in football at the next meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The meeting, which will be chaired by FIFA president Sepp Blatter, takes place in Zurich at the start of March with the subject of sin bins up for discussion.

However, the governing body confirmed that the potential new measure "relates to recreational or amateur football, particularly at youth level in this instance...not...to semi-professional or professional football".

If successful at lower levels of the game, FIFA may consider utilising sin bins as an alternative to red and yellow cards for certain offences.

Time penalties in a sin bin have been discussed by Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini, with both interested in seeing whether such measures could be implemented in football like it has been in rugby union.

But, FIFA added, the items were "not yet at the stage of being considered...for decision in terms of alterations to the existing laws of the game".
