Sherwood praises gritty point

1 February 2014 20:03

Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood praised his side's character, despite a disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw at Hull City.

Sherwood saw his six-match unbeaten streak in the league brought to an end on Wednesday, as his side were hammered 5-1 by Manchester City at White Hart Lane.

Shane Long's early strike had them on the back foot again on Saturday, before Paulinho scored just after the hour mark to give them a hard-earned point.

"We are disappointed that we haven't come here and won but you don't always get what you want," Sherwood said.

"It was obviously a poor start to the game for us, to concede so early.

"I didn't think there was any panic from us, I thought we were in control of the game. (It's) just unfortunate that we couldn't score more goals.

"In the second half, I thought we dominated, we started to roll the ball into (Emmanuel) Adebayor and (Roberto) Soldado around the box and it looked like we were going to score.

"We managed to get back in it with a great goal from Paulinho but one thing was for sure, if we weren't going to win then we weren't going to lose.

"And that's really pleasing from my point of view."

Sherwood acknowledged that Hull have claimed some important scalps at home this season – notably Liverpool in December – and he paid tribute to Long, who opened his account on his home debut for the Yorkshire club.

"At the end of the season, this could turn out to be a very important point for both sides," he added.

"I expected it to be tough and we've seen some teams come here and struggle this year, some top teams. They (Hull) are capable.

"They have got their own threats, the two lads (Long and Nikica Jelavic) who are new signings up front.

"Long gave us a problem early doors, chasing lost causes and he took his goal very well. We had to show some character to dig in."
