Premier League: Hull City 1 Tottenham 1

1 February 2014 17:51

Shane Long's first Hull City goal helped end the club's run of four Premier League defeats as they drew 1-1 with Tottenham on Saturday.

Long – who Hull failed to sign in August – joined Steve Bruce's side for a club-record fee in mid-January.

And he made an immediate impression on the Hull fans alongside fellow home debutant Nikica Jelavic, who flicked on for his goal in the 12th minute, the club's first in the league this year.

Hull, who had failed to beat Tottenham in their two previous meetings this season, controlled the first half, but were pegged back by Paulinho's 61st-minute equaliser.

Jelavic hit the post and went close on two more occasions as Hull pressed for a winner but they had to settle for a point despite their promising performance.

Jake Livermore was ineligible to play for Hull under the conditions of his loan from Spurs, while Jan Vertonghen made his first appearance in almost two months after recovering from an ankle injury.

After a tame opening, the game exploded into life as Jelavic lifted a cross from former Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone onto the roof of the net with a clever first-time shot.

Emmanuel Adebayor then drew an excellent save from Steve Harper – standing in for the suspended Allan McGregor – with his volleyed finish tipped over the bar, before Hull took the lead 60 seconds later.

Jelavic's flick-on fell to Long in space and the Republic of Ireland striker burst between Tottenham defenders Kyle Walker and Vertonghen before producing a clever left-foot finish to delight the home crowd.

Tottenham had two penalty appeals turned down as they looked for a response but Hull were comfortable during the first half.

Tim Sherwood's men were much-improved after the break though, and Christian Eriksen fired over before Roberto Soldado forced a good save from Harper from a tight angle after Paulinho's shot deflected fortuitously to him.

Spurs got their equaliser just after the hour-mark, although it came with a large slice of luck, as a short free-kick led to Rose thrashing an attempt at goal from 45 yards.

The shot was flying wide, but Paulinho's excellent first touch created enough space for him to strike on goal – an effort that fizzed past Harper and into the back of the net.

Jelavic hit the post as Hull searched for a quick response, with his stabbed effort from a Long cross from an acute angle almost going in, while the Croatia striker had an effort cleared by Michael Dawson in the 71st minute after Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was beaten after coming off his line.

Another Jelavic effort was saved by Lloris with five minutes left, but it was not the striker's day, with his forward partner stealing the headlines.
