Pochettino praises ´excellent´ Southampton after Fulham win

1 February 2014 19:59

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino feels his side are on an "excellent path" following Saturday's 3-0 win at Fulham.

An accomplished second-half display gave Southampton all three points, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez ensuring victory after Adam Lallana had put the visitors ahead in the 64th minute.

The triumph marked Southampton's first win at Craven Cottage for over 66 years and capped an impressive week for Pochettino's side after they held title challengers Arsenal to a 2-2 draw at St Mary's on Tuesday.

And the Argentinian is excited for Southampton's future after witnessing his team dismantle a Fulham outfit that now sits at the bottom of the Premier League table.

"It was an excellent day. There were three great goals, a great performance and a great win," Pochettino said.

"I thought we deserved more against Arsenal, when we played very well and only got one point. We redeemed that today.

"The team is maturing a lot. We have a very young team mixed with experience

"The young players are talented and passionate so the mixture is an excellent combination for us. We're on an excellent path."

Pochettino was pleased with the contributions of Lallana, Lambert and Rodriguez, tipping all three for a spot in England's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

"If (England manager) Roy Hodgson was in attendance at the game against Yeovil (who Southampton beat 2-0 in the FA Cup), Arsenal and Fulham, he would have seen those three games live and in these three games our strikers scoring goals, he added.

"It was very important that the three strikers got goals and got on the scoresheet and that's always going to increase their chances of making it to Brazil so that was important for them."
