League Two Wrap: Chesterfield extend lead, York grab late winner

1 February 2014 18:40

Chesterfield extended their lead at the top of League Two to three points with a 3-1 home win over struggling Bristol Rovers.

Paul Cook's side hit the front through Sam Morsy in the fifth minute, but were pegged back by the visitors when Lee Brown struck in the 36th minute.

But the hosts went into the break on top thanks to an Oliver Banks goal a minute before the interval, and two minutes after half-time Eoin Doyle doubled the advantage as the leaders sealed a third win in a row.

They took advantage of Scunthorpe United's goalless draw at Hartlepool United, while managerless Oxford United gained ground on Russ Wilcox's men by beating Wimbledon 2-1 at the Kassam Stadium.

Tom Newey and David Connolly put the hosts two up after 56 minutes and although Charlie Wyke pulled one back for the visitors 15 minutes from time, it was not enough to stop Oxford extending their unbeaten run to five matches.

That result allowed Oxford to leapfrog Fleetwood Town, who went down 2-1 at home to mid-table York City.

A Conor McLaughlin own goal in first-half stoppage time gave the visitors the lead, before Mikael Mandron levelled matters in the 72nd minute. It looked as though both sides would have to settle for a draw until Wes Fletcher claimed the winner for York and consigned Fleetwood to their first defeat in six.

Rochdale and Burton Albion were among other sides in the top seven to drop points, the former going down 1-0 at home to Dagenham and Redbridge thanks to Rhys Murphy's second-half strike, while Burton were held 1-1 at home by Exeter City.

At the other end of the table, Chris Wilder took charge of rock-bottom Northampton Town for the first time, and his side earned a point with a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Town.

Wilder's men are six points adrift after Torquay United overcame a lack of sleep to win 1-0 at Portsmouth. Billy Bodin netted the winner in the 27th minute for Chris Hargreaves' side, who had to leave their hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning due to flooding.

Elsewhere, Bury beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0, Plymouth Argyle scored late to earn a 1-1 draw with Mansfield Town, and Accrington Stanley's game with Morecambe, who were down to 10 men, was abandoned after 58 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch.
