Lambert blames fatigue for Villa defeat at Everton

1 February 2014 19:37

Paul Lambert blamed tiredness after Everton came from behind to beat his Aston Villa side 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Leandro Bacuna put Villa ahead against the run of play in the opening period after Aiden McGeady had hit the post, but goals from Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas in the last 16 minutes changed the complexion of the game.

However, despite hosts Everton dominating possession and looking the more dangerous throughout at Goodison Park, Lambert feels his team deserved at least a point.

"I think for 70 minutes we were really comfortable in the game," he said. "First half, we never really looked under threat at all. We got a really good goal and looked really comfortable.

"First (Everton) goal was really poor from our point of view. Second goal, I think you hold your hand up and it's a world-class free-kick.

"Last 15 minutes, tiredness probably crept in due to the game the other night (a 4-3 victory over West Brom on Wednesday). You lose one, but the second goal - there's nothing you can do about that.

"I don't think we deserved to lose the game."

Lambert was forced to withdraw central defender Ron Vlaar with 10 minutes left to play and the Scot confirmed the Dutchman would need to be assessed.

"It's his hamstring," he added. "Hopefully it's not too bad. We'll have to wait and see."
