Allardyce confirms Carroll appeal

1 February 2014 17:43

Sam Allardyce has confirmed that West Ham will appeal Andy Carroll's controversial red card in the 2-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday.

Carroll played a crucial role in establishing the hosts' two-goal advantage at Upton Park, setting up both of captain Kevin Nolan's first-half strikes with trademark headed knock-downs.

However, the England international's first home Premier League start of the season was cut short when referee Howard Webb showed him a straight red card after a seemingly innocuous aerial duel with Chico Flores just before the hour mark.

Carroll's flailing arm clipped the Spaniard’s head, and Webb had no hesitation in dismissing the former Liverpool man.

Allardyce, though, refused to blame the official, instead questioning Flores' conduct while admitting that he is hopeful Carroll's three-match ban will be overturned.

"We will appeal," he said. "It's the reaction of the player (Flores) that makes life extremely difficult for the referee. So while I think it was harsh, he (Webb) must've thought his arm had smashed him in the face, even though it hasn't.

"It's not the right reaction (from Chico), but he's not my player, he's Michael’s (Laudrup's) player so that's for him to sort out, I don't think it was the right way of acting.

"Hopefully we don't lose Andy for three games. All I can hope is that the panel in the cold light of day see it for what it is."

Allardyce, who described Carroll as "gutted" with Webb's decision, went on to praise his side for the resilience they showed when down to 10 men.

"It's a great win for us and one that's taken a little bit of the pressure of us," he added.
