Mourinho backs Terry to earn new deal

30 September 2013 10:53

Jose Mourinho insists that John Terry will have no problem earning himself a new contract at Chelsea if he maintains his current form.

The 32-year-old headed home his first goal of the season to cancel out Gylfi Sigurdsson's opener in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Terry cut a frustrated figure last season after struggling to hold down a first-team place under previous manager Rafael Benitez.

But he has been an ever-present under Mourinho in the Premier League this term and the Portuguese has been delighted with the former England captain's form, even backing him to earn a new deal at the club.

"I think he always has a future the way he is playing - he has a future in here (at Chelsea), in China, or wherever he wants to have a future," Mourinho said.

"I have always told him from day one - don't speak (publicly) about signing a new contract, just speak about working very hard from a physical point of view so you don't have the same kind of problems you have had in the past two years.

"He is a very good player and very good players have no problems with their contracts."

Mourinho believes that Terry's impressive start to the campaign is down to mutual trust between the pair.

He added: "I think the fact that he knows that I like him has been important.

"I trust the player. This is important. In his head he knows if I leave him out I am trying to do the best thing for him and the best thing for the team so he is not under this pressure he was in other years.

"Physically we are working very well with him. I think he is in good condition and he is a brilliant boy."
