Bach unconcerned by World Cup switch

29 September 2013 19:57

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach is not worried by a potential clash of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Winter Olympics.

The newly elected German has spoken with his FIFA counterpart Sepp Blatter about the football tournament being moved into the latter months of the year and is hopeful of finding a compromise to avoid it taking place at the same time as the Olympics.

Bach believes FIFA are working towards holding their event in November, rather than January or February.

Negotiations come following fears that the World Cup, which will be held in Qatar, would clash with the Winter Olympics if moved from its traditional slot of June-July.

"So far we have heard the proposal by the FIFA president to have it in November 2022, and there would be no clash whatsoever," Bach told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I'm not worried at all. What I know is that I spoke with president Blatter about this proposal, November, and there would be no conflict at all.

"About the rest I will not speculate because I am sure that in the mutual interest of the World Cup and the Olympic Winter Games, that there will be no clash with the dates."

FIFA's executive committee is due to come to a decision on the World Cup's dates at their summit this week.
