Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Caracas move two points clear

26 September 2013 06:20

Caracas have moved two points clear at the top of the Venezuelan Primera Division after a 2-0 win at Deportivo La Guaira.

Two first-half goals to Rubert Quijada and Luis Gonzalez were enough to seal victory for Venezuela's most decorated club.

The win means Caracas have only lost once this season and move to 18 points, with second-placed Deportivo Anzoategui on 16 points after drawing 0-0 at defending champions Zamora.

Rock-bottom Atletico El Vigia lost its sixth successive game with a 5-2 thumping at Deportivo Tachira.

Gelmin Rivas opened the scoring for Deportivo Tachira in the 12th minute and when Jose Meza struck a brace just before half-time, the hosts had established a comfortable three-goal lead.

It got worse for El Vigia early in the second half with Yoandri Orozco striking five minutes after the restart and Rivas completing his double on 68 minutes to make it 5-0.

There was some respite for El Vigia with Joan Osorio scoring in the 60th and 63rd minutes to make the scoreline a little more respectable.

Jorge Zambrana's late winner secured a third successive victory for Carabobo as they defeated Estudiantes de Merida 3-2.

After taking an early lead through Carlos de Castro, Estudiantes conceded their advantage by half-time with Carabobo's Jean Bastidas and Emilio Renteria finding the back of the net.

Estudiantes thought they had secured a point when Imanol Iriberri struck on 79 minutes until Zambrana popped up four minutes from time to steal victory for Carabobo.

In other matches, Nestor Bareiro's hat-trick powered Aragua to a 4-1 win over Zulia, Atletico Venezuela fought back from two goals down to triumph 3-2 against Yaracuyanos and there was a 0-0 draw between Deportivo Petare and Tucanes.

Mauricio Parra's 89th minute strike secured a 1-0 win for Deportivo Lara over Trujillanos and Mineros de Guayana's contest against Llaneros de Guanare finished goalless.
