Pardew backs Cisse to hit top form

26 September 2013 09:52

Alan Pardew is hopeful Papiss Cisse can rediscover his top form after the striker netted in Newcastle's League Cup win over Leeds United.

Cisse's opener in the 2-0 third-round victory at St James' Park on Wednesday was his first goal since Newcastle's 1-0 success over Fulham in April.

And Pardew feels the Senegal international striker can now find his rhythm, while also praising the role played by Sammy Ameobi in both goals against Leeds.

"He (Cisse) had a couple of big chances before that and snatched at them, and it just goes to show where he was, really," the manager said.

"Goals can settle a player down and hopefully it will because he has not been as powerful and as good as he had been.

"But they were two great goals, both made by Sammy in different circumstances.

"It was good ability from Sammy for the first, and then a simple pass and the second goal was all about Gouffs (Yoann Gouffran) setting himself and (it was) a fantastic hit."

The win came as a welcome relief for Pardew after he watched his side lose 3-2 at home to Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday, after twice taking the lead.

But the 52-year-old insisted his side are not getting ahead of themselves, and urged his players to maintain their level against Leeds in upcoming games.

"It was super performance. I am still hurting from Saturday, if I am honest because I can see on the training ground that we have got the squad in a good place.

"All the guys who came in tonight have done terrifically and therefore, that compounds the result on Saturday.

"I am not going to get carried away tonight.

"We are in the last 16, as we should be, but it's a reminder to us that we have got to get consistency at this football club."
